Book Description

Freddy Lupin is about to undergo his first transwolftation. It’s a rite of passage for every werewolf. For Freddy, however, it’s going to be the most embarrassing night of his life. Because Freddy is not going to turn into a wolf. He’s going to turn into a poodle. Thus begins a funny and fast-paced adventure, wherein Freddy is thrown out of his pack, uncovers the truth about his father’s mysterious death, and finds out that a werewolf hunter is planning to destroy all of his family and friends, and Freddy is the only one who can stop him. He might be small, pink, and groomed, but luckily, Freddy Lupin is 100 % wolf.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–6—Freddy Lupin has been waiting all his life for his first transformation into a wolf. Raised in a castle as a member of a proud and ancient werewolf pack, he has had a difficult time since his father's mysterious death. Prone to accidents and mischief-making, he often angers his uncle, Sir Hotspur, and spars with his young cousins, Harriet and Chariot. But when the auspicious night of "transwolftation" finally arrives, Freddy finds himself changed into, not a mighty wolf, but a little black poodle. As if this is not enough humiliation, his evil cousins capture him and have him dyed pink. After escaping the groomer, Freddy finally unites with some friendly canines, only to find himself in a horrible pound from which no dog has ever escaped. There, he learns the truth about his father's death and plots his return to the castle to save his pack from a deadly werewolf hunter. Character development is certainly not the point here, and readers never find out for certain why Freddy turns into a poodle, but the fast-paced action and numerous fart jokes will lure young reluctant readers.—Hayden Bass, Seattle Public Library, WA END

5.0 out of 5 stars Review by Theo, aged nine, November 22, 2009
This review is from: 100% Wolf (Hardcover)
[typed and submitted by Theo's mom, but written by Theo]

This book is really good! Freddy Lupin is so excited to be able to have his first transwolfation but instead of transwolfing he transdogs into a poodle. It's funny! It's a genius idea to make him be a poodle and a wolf. Then his mean cousins Chariot and Hariot dye him pink and shave some of his fur off.

I like this book because his parents were able to survive the silver bullet shot by Dr. Cripp, so it wasn't too sad. My favorite part is when Freddy meets Batty because it's an interesting way of meeting. Harriet and Chariet were very very mean! I feel sorry for Pam when her shop was destroyed.

I recommend this book for readers that don't get super scared super easily. It's not extremely scary, but had some creep up the spine parts. And for readers who like funny books/comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun intro to the paranormal world for younger readers, November 14, 2009

This review is from: 100% Wolf (Hardcover)
I bought this book on a whim for my almost eight year old, who's kind of sick of the normal fare for his age group. He loves Freddie Lupin, actually reads some of this on his own for the first time! The humor is wonderful and I enjoied it as well so reading time doesn't equal torture right now to the tune of, "Mom, has it been twenty minutes yet?"

Great coming of age story for any age!

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent kid adventure, January 19, 2011

This review is from: 100% Wolf (Paperback)
The funniest thing about this book is the premise, apparent from its attractive front cover, of a werewolf who turns into a little pink poodle instead. As for the rest of it, well, this is a decent fast-paced kid adventure, not terribly funny, and crammed full of far too much gratuitous bathroom humor. The prose is not especially good. Note that the writing also contains many Britishisms (the author is Australian), but these will not distract most readers. So, not as funny as I hoped, but it's a quick read that will certainly amuse some kids in grades 3-4.
