4.0 out of 5 stars Prodigal Son Stands On Own Merits July 27, 2001
Format:Audio CD
Chris Stills "100 Year Thing" is a well crafted if somewhat uneven folk-rock album that is slightly reminiscent of his father's early solo work - partiuclarly Stephen's second solo LP. However, to say this record by Stills the younger is a knock-off of his old man's riffs would not be fair.
Genetics are often a mixed blessing and there is no doubt that Chris Stills' voice is reminiscent of his father's circa 1967 - 1971 but Chris has his own distinct sound. Where Stephen's voice is smoky Chris' voice is harmonic. In some ways Chris' voice has many of the qualities of Stephen's sometimes singing partner David Crosby.
Four songs in this collection make this a worthwhile purchase.
"Tears of Envy" is a great acoustic rocker with a tremendous pallette of rythmic overlays combined with fairly strong lyrics. This song should have been a top ten hit in heavy rotation on college stations but the A & R folks at the label obviously didn't have a clue how to market this record.
The second outstanding tune is "Trouble". It starts out slow but then insinuates itself into your brain. One of the best lyrics on the album.
The next gem, in my opinion, is the title cut. Although this song has hints of the elder Stills "know you got to run" and "singing call" that is not a bad thing. I probably wouldn't have used this tune to open the CD but it's a well crafted piece of folk-rock that carries a blood line from Buffalo Springfield through Poco and right up to Wilco.
The last, but not least, exemplary cut on this record is "If I Were A Mountain". This nice little country-folk gem features some fine open chord picking and really highlights Chris Stills' voice.
Buy this CD. It's all above average and some of it hints at how good this kid could be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dream Come True July 17, 2000
By Bonnie
Format:Audio CD
I loved this album. The first time I heard about it was in a music catalogue, and for the longest time, I was frightened to buy it. I love his dad's music, and I guess I was afraid that Chris's music wouldn't be up to par. I needn't have worried. The album was absolutely beautiful. though somewhat like his father's music, it is also very unique. I loved the song "Razorblades". I had just finished reading All The Weyrs of Pern when I first heard it, and it reminded me so much of that book that I thought it amazing. I am an aspiring author and used to chasing meanings out of the woodwork, so the poetic quality of the album greatly astounded me. the song "Last Stop" actually gave me a great idea for a possible story. Over all a great album, but I think it really needs more recognition and air time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely love it! May 31, 2001

If you even remotely like CSN&Y, this CD is a MUST! Very close to his father's music in harmonies, lyrics and guitar, but with a slightly more "modern" sound. I received this CD as a gift from a fellow music lover and have purchased several copies for other people I know. Anyone who likes great singer/songwriter folksy music should certainly check out Chris Stills.

3.0 out of 5 stars Predictable April 27, 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
Chris Stills has a pretty sound not unlike his father Stephen. In fact, it sounds very much like a Stephen Stills album, although I don't find the songs as interesting. It is a pleasant listen, very good for background, but nothing I can sink my teeth into. The guitar work is of course father like son. Vocally, Chris sounds very much like his dad as well. It's an enjoyable but predictable listen. I like it, but I don't love it. I would recommend it to anyone interested in Stephen Stills, in lovely guitar work, and a soft background type sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Chris, please give us some more! March 23, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I am sorry to say that I am a very late comer to hearing this album. I do have to admit that Stephen Stills is one of my all time favorite artists and that is what eventually inspired me to check out Chris Stills. I imagine that it must be very difficult to be a son or daughter of a very famous and talented parent, in that people will always be making comparisons between the parent and their offspring. Perhaps it may even hamper a talented son or daughter from being able to feel like they can ever be as successful in their own right. I have compassion for people in this position.

Having said all of that, I must say that Chris Stills is a very talented singer, songwriter, musician, and that this album '100 Year Thing' has become one of my favorites. I love every song on the album. I am sad that he has not gone on to make more music recently because I would certainly be interested in hearing it. Chris is obviously talented in his own right and was also blessed with the experience of being around people that I consider to be some of the best musical artists of the late sixties and seventies, and so has some of those influences as apart of his style.

I am very impressed with Chris Stills and do hope we will hear more from him in the future! Thank you Chris!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great listening! September 18, 1999
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I was pleasantly surprised that the entire CD is great listening. I had never heard of Chris Stills until I he performed live on a local radio station singing "100 Year Thing". I loved his sound! It's similar to his Dad's style, but with a NEW fresh sound. You won't be unhappy if you make this choice!

1.0 out of 5 stars Very very poor!
Heard a lot about this guy and bought the cd without listening. Man, what a disappointing piece of crab. The music is poor and the songs didn't keep me awake. Don't try.
