Book Description

June 15, 1999
Commemorating the first century of publishing the American Journal of Nursing, this outstanding pictorial volume chronicles the dynamic relationship between the nursing profession and the culture at large. Over 400 photographs and anecdotes from the pages of AJN, the American Red Cross and other repositories of nursing history were selected to document nursing's struggle from handmaiden to specialist, from training programs to graduate education, and from apprenticeship to evidence-based practice and teaching. Eighteen contemporary nursing leaders add their insightful perspectives on issues that have affected the nursing profession throughout this century. 100 Years of American Nursing: Celebrating a Century of Caring is a testament to the dramatic progress that American nurses have achieved and the perfect gift to give yourself, a friend, or a colleague.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Nursing at its Finest", February 25, 2000

This review is from: 100 Years of American Nursing: Celebrating a Century of Caring (Hardcover)
This is a well-done pictorial review of nursing over the century as title indicates. It is a beautiful reflection from the 1900's to the current status of the Advanced Practice Nurse today. It includes biographies and photos across the United States and abroad wherever nurses served. It begins the story of nursing from the Henry Street Settlement with the acknowledgement that "prevention of illness is cheaper than caring for the ill" by Lillian Wald for Metropolitan Life Insurance in 1902. The turbulent times of 1990's with nurses on strike during a critical time when healthcare needs are expanding is also adressed-as Congresswoman Barbara Jordan says "This is no time for nurses' numbers to be declining: Congress has just expanded Medicare. Without nurses we don't have a system." It concludes with a comment from Margaretta Styles addressing the need for credentialing to meet the needs of all-especially the underserved. Stories are told throughout from nurses in WWI through Desert Storm.

Enjoyed reading this book. We have come a long way since Florence Nightingale started to clean up medical care.
