Book Description

August 2002
Born at the beginning of the last century, he has stolen the hearts of people all over the world. The Teddy bear has lived through the many upheavals of the last 100 years and has not only maintained his appeal, he has become even more lovable with the passage of time. The Steiff Teddy is 100 years old; Who created him? What did he look like? Where did his name come from? All of these questions are answered and many more secrets are told concerning the jointed Teddy bear's creation 100 years ago in the small town of Giegen in the south of Germany. This official centenary book gives a comprehensive description of the story behind Richard Steiff's creation and the Teddy bear's road to success. Specialist author Gunther Pfeiffer gives a full account of recent discoveries related to the invention and early history of the Teddy bear and presents models that verify these findings. A special insight is given into the various stages of the manufacturing process which is still practised today, as well as the secret of Teddy's overwhelming success. Other chapters relate the 'bearish' experiences of individual people, describe the current collectors' market and look at the significance of the Teddy as a collectable antique. The book is rounded off by a comprehensive resume of the many models produced by Steiff to date. Special attention has been given to the photographs and illustrations selected to accompany the various chapters. An intensive search through the Steiff archives brought many previously undiscovered historical photographs to light which are published here for the first time.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The first stuffed toy bear appeared in 1902, and it became universally known as the "Teddy" bear after a political cartoon depicted President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear cub. Teddy bears are now hot collectors' items, and these three centennial books reflect the interests of adult collectors and enthusiasts. Schiffer's guides for collectors on many topics are well known, and this one by Hockenberry follows the Schiffer format, with a historical summary of early companies in the development of the teddy bear and a decade-by-decade chronology of collectors' bears with excellent color photographs and estimated values. Pfeiffer's book is a wonderfully illustrated and detailed history of the German Steiff company, maker of the most sought-after bears. Historic photos, dating from the founding of Margarete Steiff GmbH in 1880 to the present, provide an overview of the company's products and methods of construction. Current values are not given. Teddy's World, on the other hand, is a fantasy picture book with large color photographs of teddies posed in a variety of action and landscape settings. Envisioned by the creator of Play with Your Food, it contains 182 pages of full-color photomontages and several fold-out images. It is intended as a fun book, with very little text or collector's information. Of the three, the Hockenberry book is most useful for collectors and would be welcome in public library collections. The other two will appeal to enthusiasts, but are not essential purchases. Constance Ashmore Fairchild, formerly with Univ. of Illinois Libs., Urbana-Champaign
