5.0 out of 5 stars Colorful and easy to read.
This book is very good. It is in color. A big plus. The words are written in simplified Chinese characters, pinyin, and English. Must have book.

1.0 out of 5 stars Without the audio CD the book is useless
I lived in China for a few year so I decided to get this book to practice Mandarin. Without the audio CD this book is useless. Yes, the book is printed in pinyin, but the sounds in pinyin are very different then in English for the same letters, therefore you will be lost without the audio CD.

The audio CD is not available for downloading from the publisher's...

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice for beginners, but better as a supplement, February 10, 2010

This review is from: 1000 Mandarin Chinese Words (1000 Words) (English and Chinese Edition) (Paperback)
This book teaches vocabulary in a theme-oriented manner, e.g. family members, food, etc. The large and colorful pages make it attractive to children. The pages are "busy" - lots of things to see and learn - that it almost seems like a seek-and-find sort of book. But it doesn't really teach conversation, so it seems to be better when used as an adjunct to a more formal language learning program.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Beginners aid to for Mandarin Students, November 7, 2009

This review is from: 1000 Mandarin Chinese Words (1000 Words) (English and Chinese Edition) (Paperback)
The book is a great aid in learning Mandarin. Not entirely by itself but together with your good general dictionary and other texts etc for the self-learning student, in my opinion and experience based upon my self instruction and success in a conversational level with German and Russian. I found that one could not have enough material for the task! There is always a point where, a point in one text etc becomes clearer with another source! And with the Internet, there is a wealth of downloadable material for the self-learner. However, I recommend this book- " A picture is worth....", etc!

I ordered the 1000 Mandarin Chinese Words and was very pleased with the book. It was made of strong paper and would be able to handle rough handling by children. I thought it was easy to read and understand (of course I am not a child, but I thought a child would be able to understand the contents well).

I am quite pleased with the contect of the book and how well it is made.

The pictures are a little busy, but it provides a good introduction to many words. The audio CD is also good quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1000 words in pictures, September 12, 2009

This review is from: 1000 Mandarin Chinese Words (1000 Words) (English and Chinese Edition) (Paperback)
This was a good and inexpensive book that has photos with the words written in pinyin and Chinese.
The only problem is you need a knowledge of how to pronounce the pinyin.

But this is a good reference book and vocabulary builder.
