This "art museum in a bottle" is a rare find indeed. It is a Barnes and Nobles production: a gift that keeps on giving. It covers both the best and the rarest of paintings from the 13th though the 20th centuries. It is hard to believe that a single normal sized book (It is an 8.5 by 11 inch book, with multiple high quality color photos per page.) could hold so much art history. But one has to see this book to believe it. All of the classics are present, as are all of the great artists of the time span covered. The color plates, for their size, are of exquisite quality, clean and glossy.

Most are of a size that can easily fit an ordinary scanner where they can then be downloaded into photo files such as iphoto. Each photo is numbered and accompanied by text that gives the author, the name of the painting, a brief history and the date it was created.

There is also a detailed introduction to each century and at the back of the book, a country-by-country color-coded chronology of the entries. This is followed by a glossary of terms and an index. Fortunately I was able to get this book at a bargain price, but would have been willing to pay any reasonable asking price. Five stars.

I have owned "The Art Book" for many years and liked it very much - so much that I wanted other books like it. This book fit that need perfectly, as it covers many artists and paintings that the other "all about art" books don't touch upon. I actually got this on the clearance table at Barnes and Noble for $5 (not $55, as advertised here!) but I do think that the book is well worth spending $30 or $35 for, at least. Lovely glossy pages, chock full of well-informed information. Lovely!

I have always been interested in art but never knew where to begin. Then one day having a browse through Amazon I stumbled on this and thought it could be a good way of finding what kind of art and artists I liked.

Since buying this book I have found so many artists I would never have heard of. Artists like Arcimboldo with his quirky paintings of people with faces made of fruit and Isaak Levitan, who created the sparse but beautifully colored `The Vladimirka Road'. Of course the book features the likes of Da Vinci and Van Gogh, but I found the lesser known paintings to be much more interesting in terms of dipping my toes into the art world. For those of you interested in the biographical side of things, the book also offers short biographies of some of the artists which I found easily digestible and interesting.

For anyone wanting to scrub up on their art, or even for Art students/teachers wanting a touch of inspiration, I can definitely recommend this book. Great pictures by some great artists, plus the price is reasonable too!

All is great. Some typo-offs seems inevitable. Just for example. Page 380, about Sezanne. If he died in 1906 it can't be 200 years from his death. Also, Zolya is Italian (well. French mother and Greko-Italian father) as Sezanne. For me the fact Sezanne is Italian -a revelation. New findings or a banal typo?
