Book Description

1000 Photos May 15, 2000
Pages of full-color photos identify mineral formations as common as iron and sulfur and as precious as diamonds and rubies. Minerals are shown as they occur both in natural deposits and in their cut-and-polished states. Readers get an overview of mineral sources, gem cutting, imitation gems, metals and metal working, and much more. Also described and shown are meteorites that have fallen to earth from outer space. Perhaps most fascinating of all are the many color photos of fossils, including insects, shell fish, vegetable forms, and animal skeletons, preserved in fossilized formations for millions of years.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5 Up-While not a handbook for field or laboratory use, this oversized volume will attract rock hounds (or even wanna-bes). The text-much of it in the captions accompanying the illustrations-is often demanding in concepts and vocabulary. Small color photos depict minerals in their natural and refined states; archaeological, architectural, and mining sites; jewelry; and more. If you already own Christopher Pellant's handsome Collecting Gems and Minerals (Sterling, 1998) or his equally eye-catching and more useful Rocks and Minerals (DK, 1992), or the National Audubon Society First Field Guide: Rocks and Minerals (Scholastic, 1998), this volume may be superfluous, but if you have a chorus of incipient geologists hollering for more, this book should fill the bill.
