4.0 out of 5 stars smells like pavement, tastes like chunk, April 16, 2000

While I don't understand why the band chose to release this track as a single, I'm grateful for the b-sides.

White Noise is evidently a Come Pick Me Up outtake, and it's pretty good. I tend to agree with an earlier reviewer who said it sounds like Pavement on one of their less noisy days. No found sounds here.

The Bowie cover is alone worth the price of admission. This is the track the band opened their Halloween show with last year. Very tasty. It's a shame the former Davie Jones doesn't sound like this (anymore).

Mebane is a town in North Carolina. I'm guessing it's somewhere in rural NC -- you know, Tom Wolfe country. The alternate take of 1000 pounds includes vibes and a banjo. I dunno either.

Buy this single. See the band live.

4.0 out of 5 stars Crush those bullies and demons down..., June 25, 2000
This review is from: 1000 Pounds (Audio CD)
Im glad Superchunk released this song as a single. It was one of the best off the latest album (1999's Come Pick Me Up). When listening to it, I see visions of a little kid who wants to grow up so s/he can stop being the bud of jokes and stop being pushed around. The Bowie cover is pretty neat-o. Though I would have dug hearing Mac sing 'Rock N Roll Suicide' or 'Kooks' more than that one... The stripped down version of 1000 LBS was cool too. Im glad they are letting the listener hear what they are saying rather than blasting the heck out of your ears to make up for half written songs. Its nice to see what people grow up to be. Especially when they grow up to be great. Superchunk is getting there.

5.0 out of 5 stars best single yet, February 17, 2000

I have pretty much all of the Superchunk singles, and this one is my favorite. Has two bonus tracks, White Noise, and Scary Monsters (the Bowie song), and a acoustic version of the title track. White Noise sounds to me like Pavement, kinda poppy but still out there, Scary Monsters is good old fashioned guitar-solo-big-drums rock, and the acoustic version is ehhhh well it's okay but nothing to get all excited about. Definitely one to pick up, god knows if we'll get another b-side compliation anytime soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A perfect single with great extras tacked on, November 2, 2000

The title track is not only one of the best Superchunk songs, it's one of the best "pop" songs released in recent years. It's one of those flawless blends of music and words that you always hope for and rarely get. The rest of the tracks here are incredible, too, and well worth the purchase on their own.
