Not from Texas and this is a GREAT book,
By H.R. (Baltimore, MD United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy (Paperback)
This thoughtful book was designed for the intelligent reader who wants accurate information presented with occasional humor and no preaching. I like that it isn't dumbed down and uses (and defines) the terms my doctor and the nurses use when talking to each other so I know what they're talking about. The frankness of the author's tone provides stability in discussions of even the most awful problems that can occur in pregnancy. Worth the price alone is the tear-out chart that gives month-to-month info on the baby's development, what the mother may be feeling, helpful hints, when to call the doctor, what tests will be done and what will happen at doctor visits. It also has references to web sites where you can get further information. Leave "What to Expect when you're Expecting" on the shelf and buy this book.

It's like having Dr. Thurston in your living room.,
By A Customer
This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy (Paperback)
Dr. Thurston is my doctor and though he is always accessible if I need him, it isn't always convienent to call him at 2:00 a.m. with a quick question. That is why his book is perfect... it is like having him right in my living room, available to answer any question I have, no matter how trivial. I have found the chapter on medications to be invaluable and I refer to it all the time. I also love the pull out reference page on what the little tyke looks like, what I should be feeling and what will happen at my next appointment. My husband looks at the pullout and the whole book all the time and it really helps him to feel involved in the pregnancy. When we first found out we were pregnant, we were clueless as to what to expect. This book answered all our questions and even made us laugh at certain things. His sense of humor really put us at ease. It goes with me everywhere. Dr. Thurston's book...Don't leave home without it!!!!!!!!!!!

telephone solitude,
By Andrea Bertrand (dallas, tx USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy (Paperback)
This review is aimed at obstetricians searching for a book to recommend to their patients. I have utilized many different books in the past. The phone lines kept ringing. This book really cuts the calls and serves patients with thoughtful, insightful, and in many instances, humorous answers. I give it out, I recommend it, and I'm personally grateful to Dr. Thurston for taking the time to write it. I simply say, review it and try it .......you'll like it!John D. Bertrand, MD

A valuable tool for all expectant moms!,

This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy (Paperback)
As a fourth time mother-to-be, I thought I had no need for yet another book on pregnancy. How wrong I was! As each pregnancy is different from the rest, I had unexpected questions which arose from time to time. Instead of calling the doctor in the middle of the night, I refered to this wonderful book. This well-written and reassuring book is written in a question and answer-type format. Expectant moms will find "1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy" to be insightful and delightful, as Dr. Thurston sprinkles his answers with occasional bits of humor. As this is the most informative book I have read on pregnancy (and delivery), it is easily my favorite. You will be so glad you have this excellent book on your nightstand!

My pregnancy bible...,
By A Customer
This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy (Paperback)
I purchased more than 10 pregnancy books and read them all cover to cover at least once. This book was by far the best. Anytime I had a question I would like to ask my OB, (which was everday) I would reference this book instead. I can honestly say thanks to this book I only called my OB twice with questions, the rest were answered with a quick look at this book. This one I read probably 10 times!PS - I am in Texas but this was not my OB. I was recommended this book by a friend who had used it. He was not her Dr. either.

This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy: Everything Every Expecting Woman Needs to Know (Paperback)
I have the traditional expecting books and got this one with the second pregnancy. It answered many questions that I had forgotten or didn't learn during the first pregnancy. The entire book is a question and answer book sorted by categories. Each question and answer is numbered and referenced in the index. On the third pregnancy, I knew enough not to get out any books until about the 15th week. There were a couple of things I needed to check and I went right for Thurston's book though I have some other good ones. Get answers on what medicines are OK to take (it's always good to check with your doctor because better medicine may be approved for pregnant women by now), why things are happening, how to handle annoyances, and more. There's a great fold-out chart that shows every few weeks of pregnancy, what to expect, how you're feeling, etc. I understand why one of the reviewers indicated that the attitude was "flippant," however, Dr. Thurston is just telling it straight. Some of us are tired of sugary advice that doesn't get right to the point. I admit that he made my second delivery better and easier than the first. Prior to that, he helped me through a miscarriage. Currently, I'm using a different doctor thanks to insurance. The new one is terrific, too... something about Thurston and the delivery he did, made me feel like I would always be well taken care of.

Best Pregnancy Reference Guide Around,
By A Customer
This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy (Paperback)
This book isn't necessarily a sit down and read it cover to cover book, although I did just that when I was pregnant with my first child. However, it is extremely helpful in answering several questions I wasn't sure were worth taking up my doctor's time while I was at my OB appointment and it saved me several calls to my doctor about what medicines I could and shouldn't take while pregnant. It is candid about several misconceived ideas that well-intentioned people pass around to pregnant woman. It has a great index in the back so you can go right to the questions you are looking for answers to.

A must for pregnant women everywhere.,

How refreshing to finally have a pregnancy book which answers just about every question a pregnant woman could have! This is my second pregnancy and I wish I would have had it for my first. Other popular pregnancy books like one which should be named "What NOT To Expect When You're Expecting", focus on "problems" during pregnancy and really had me scared during my first pregnancy. Unlike other pregnancy books, this one was actually written by a doctor. Dr. Thurston gives very straight-forward answers that are both reassuring and informative. I especially like the section on medications which are safe to use during pregnancy (this alone saves many unnecessary phone calls). This book provides the facts with a sense of humor that make reading it a very worthwhile experience. I will certainly give this book to all my pregnant friends

READ *THIS* INSTEAD OF "WHAT TO EXPECT WHILE....",
By S.Hopkin (Boston, MA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 1000 Questions About Your Pregnancy: Everything Every Expecting Woman Needs to Know (Paperback)
This book is fantastic! It explains everything in a helpful, easy format. It makes it simple to find answers to questions in certain topics and cross refernces make follow-up questions easy to answer as well. Dr. Thurston writes with a happy, charismatic tone and unless you'd be offended by a reference to God creating the body to do x,y,z, I think this is one of the better pregnancy books out there. Also, it is very updated with recent scientific knowledge and advances. (I've read other books cover to cover and would truly not recommend What to Expect While You're Expecting. Most women I know couldn't stand it. I wish I hadn't wasted the money.)

This is without question the best pregnancy book I have read! I am currently pregnant for the first time and have procured many, many books in order to educate myself as much as possible. This book is the only that I have that gives enough technical information to satisfy my curiosity and to facilitate my understanding of the issues. With most other pregnancy books, I feel "spoken down to." This book, by contrast, is written at an appropriate level. The author recognizes that the reader is an adult and treats him or her as such, which is very refreshing!
Moreover, this book addresses an amazingly complete range of issues regarding pregnancy. Never once did I think of something about which I wished to read, look it up in the index, and fail to find pertinent information about the subject. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who would like thorough and technical, yet understandable, answers to almost any question imaginable about pregnancy! |
