The NX-01 is one of my favorite ships in the star trek universe. This model dissapointed me on the level detail, but, I was happy with the size of the model and I was happy with the quality of it. Although I think that it needs to be a skill level 2 because of the small pieces(I lost a piece for 3 days before I found it. All in all I would not give 5 stars due to detail but I give it a good 4 stars.

Let me just get the Bad out of the way...
TINY, TINY, parts. Hard to put together because of how small the parts are. Even painting them was rough.. The Warp Engines would not stop falling off, and wouldn't snap tight. I just super glued the darn thing's on, which I would suggest to do anyway. The list 11 different kinds of paint, and does not tell you where to paint 6 of the 11 parts. So I have all this paint, and wondering why I had to buy it. Now comes to good part. Well, it's a small easy to put together model of the NX-01. It's detailed for how small it is, and strong as well. I dropped it a few times and it survived. Painting was easy, and even though it was my first time ever painting a model, I think I did ok. (You can check the customer pic's I put up) Over all, I am pleased. Not a bad little model, but I don't think it's for the age it says it's for. The small part's alone make it a challenge.

Nice kit as are all in this 1/1000 polar lights series. I suggest dry fitting the nacelles as they were the only problem area during construction. They sit perfectly aligned once done though. great display piece.

Bought this for my son's 10th birthday, from a local hobby shop for $20. He loves Star Trek, so I figured this would be a winner - simple snap-together model. Full disclosure, I haven't built a plastic model for 25+ years, but this one is not a good one. Many microscopic parts, and the bigger parts fit poorly. I built a lot of models as a kid, and some were better than others - Tamiya, always top-notch. Testors, pretty good. This Starship Enterprise model was basically crap. We got it together, sort of, but the fit of the pieces was horrible, and several pieces were impossibly small to work with, so we just skipped them. The moldings were rough and cheap. I understand that some portion of the price of this goes to the Star Trek people, but they are hurting their brand with this crappy model. All we needed was a simple, snap-together model, with easy success for a kid. Fail.

For anyone who has owned or have seen a Bandai Star Trek snap-together model, you are probably aware of their nice detail, accurate paint schemes, and fairly durable construction.
This model is the exact opposite of that... Small, extremely flimsy construction, doesn't come pre-painted etc etc. Polar Lights has a lot to learn about snap kits. While they claim no glue is required for assembly, its painfully obvious that if you don't use glue, various parts of this model will simply fall apart if moved or touched only slightly (namely the nacelles). The detail on the kit is otherwise pretty good, but requires painting if you don't want a solid gray model. All (or most) pieces that are lit up in the show are clear, allowing you to paint them the appropriate colors (paint not included). Decals are also fairly accurate, and also comes with the Columbia decals and deflector dish if you wish to add those instead. If you wanted to add LED lights to this kit, there is limited room to do so, but it could be done. Flash is minimal, and most of the time if a piece does have flash, its on a spot that will not be seen once assembled. However, flash is plainly visible on the rear of the nacelles. There are some *very small* clear pieces in this kit (and by small I mean one or two millimeters), so make sure to assemble over an even, flat surface, because if you drop one of them on the floor you might never find it. Now, when they say "snap together", I guess they mean: "They'll snap together, but it will fall apart as soon as you touch it". GLUE **IS** REQUIRED IF YOU WANT THIS MODEL TO BE STURDY! But then again, that defeats the whole purpose of them making it snap together, doesn't it? Enter: Bandai kits. Much more durable, pre-painted/decaled, done right. If you aren't a modeler, this Polar Lights kit will frustrate you to no end. Don't plan on doing anything with this model if you assemble according to instructions only. Keep it on the stand (if you can get it onto the stand without the nacelles falling off!). If you pick it up, or tilt it (even slightly), you're bound to have nacelle pieces peppering your floor. So i say again, the model says glue isn't required, which is fine if you want it to crumble when you pick it up. Otherwise, use glue during assembly to get a more sturdy ship. And Polar Lights, please dont ever release something like this again.. If you are going to make a snap model, at least make it somewhere approaching the quality of the Bandai kits.

This model is Junk!
The pieces break as you take them off the tree. Weather you use a hobby knife or not. Some of the parts are down right microscopic too. You really need jewelers tools to put this together, and even when you get them in place, they break as you push them in. The plastic is of poor quality, particularly the transparent pieces. This kit is rated for ages 10 and up. Well I'm 43 and I've been making models all my life, and I really can't see how they expect a 10 year old to manage this exercise in micro surgery, unless you happen to have an electron microscope handy. I got really frustrated with this and returned it along with another kit of the same product line. I'm sooooo tired of buying junk! If your a hobbyist or just looking for something to do with your kid, avoid this one! It's crap! |
