some drawbacks, but great for the money,
By Paul McIntyre (Jacksonville, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10.1-Inch Fine Ebony Netbook - 7 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I ordered my 1000HA with chiclet keyboard about a week and a half ago, and I couldn't be happier so far. Though I was surprised to see just how small 10 inches actually is (I can't even imagine having a 7-inch screen!), the screen size is comfortable for me and I'm able to cut down on my scrolling using the zoom-out feature on the touchpad--though I can see this being a problem if you're farsighted. I also haven't noticed the keyboard as being "flimsy," as some other reviewers mentioned, and even with the smaller keyboard I'm still able to type with what seems like the same accuracy. I tested out the built-in microphone and webcam with two friends in other countries, and both said they were able to see and hear me better than with my previous USB model. The speakers are average but crisp--I wouldn't recommend trying to use this thing to fill a room with sound, but if it's just you sitting with it on your lap you should be fine.As for the drawbacks, they're pretty limited but still worth mentioning. The click buttons, like previous reviewers have noted, are a little difficult to use at times. When you approach them from the front they move easily, but I still find myself trying to click from the top (like my last computer) and I have to stop and think about what I'm doing wrong. Additionally, programs seem a little slower to load if you're used to a high-powered desktop replacement, and don't even bother trying HQ video because it will be too choppy--though "regular" video is fine, and I can run Hulu, network program sites, Youtube, and my Slingbox on this model. Again, keep in mind that these things will probably slow down if you try to run something else that's heavy-duty in the middle, though. In conclusion, I love my new eeePC. I did a lot of research before buying this model, and I'm happy that I found this sleek little netbook to replace my dying (and huge) laptop. I plan to upgrade the RAM to 2GB soon, but it has been running well even without it so far. At this price, how can you go wrong!

I purchased the Asus Eee 1000HA last month for the sole purpose of downloading files from my camera when I'm in the field. Many times the client wants to see the subject matter on a larger scale as opposed to looking at the back of the camera. The Asus is a perfect fit for my job. It's small and light weight. I was never a big fan of the Windows operating system. I was always a Mac user since the technology went from film to digital. My first preference was a macbook but the price tag was too high as compared to the new line of Asus netbooks on the market. Battery life, for the Asus, is about 5 hours on a full charge when the internet is not in use and depending how many programs you have running. The built in Wi Fi is a great feature when on the road and hooking up to local area hotspots,. The size takes a little getting used to as did the switch from Mac to PC. It was well worth the price. To this day I have not had one problem with the computer. It does everything as advertised. The operating manual states the battery life will give you a 7 hour charge but I find it closer to 4-5 hours. It's still a great machine. The 160 GB hard drive allows me to download hundreds of large size files.Do yourself a favor when shopping for a netbook, give the Asus series of Netbooks a good looking over.

I bought this for using as a DJ computer, works great with virtual dj.even youtube works perfect, vimeo works in HD mode with like 20 per second frame rate or something. Pros: -looks great, works fast. -easy upgradeable (2gb memory and harddrive.) -stays 4-5 hours without the ac plug -nice screen -good price -nice keyboard -nice touch pad, I like the two finger scrolling, 3 finger right click. cons: -keyboard is shaking when you push buttons on left top corner, maybe I got the defective one but I am not going to return it for this error. -speakers are too quite, internal sound card is not so great, if you want to use it as a music player get a 25 dollars usb sound card. -a little heavy, but lighter then all the other laptops I even seen, even vaio z1

Asus 1000ha vs Asus 1000he,
By
This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10.1-Inch Fine Ebony Netbook - 7 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I have the Asus 1000he myself and love it. The Asus 1000he was sold out at our local store for the father's day sale and so we got the Asus 1000ha instead. The screen, camera, touchpad mouse, ports and overall size are exactly the same. The differences are: Finish: 1000ha Matte, 1000he Glossy Processor: 1000ha n270, 1000he n280 Bluetooth: 1000ha No, 1000he Yes Wireless:1000ha b/g, 1000he n Battery Life: 1000ha 7-hrs, 1000he 9.5-hrs Keyboard: key-style and scroll-key layout slightly different. The most immediate difference is that the matte finish of the ha is not as much of a fingerprint magnet as the he's glossy finish and the layout of the Page UP/DOWN scroll keys on the lower right hand corner. I prefer the traditional upside down "T" shape of the he's rather than the modified version of the ha's. I found that I had to relearn where the scroll buttons were on the ha while the he was pretty much the same as a regular keyboard. The he also has a chiclet style keyboard that I preferred but my dad didn't. So that part is personal. The spacing of the keys is otherwise the same. The processor speed of the n280 over the n270 isn't noticeable even when watching hulu or youtube. For casual Starbucks-type use, the wireless band doesnt make a difference, although the n is backwards compatible with b/g so why not? My he's 9.5 is currently only pushing 7hrs (I get 8 to 8.5hrs back home, internet radio and BT on) because it constantly has to reconnect as the signal keeps dropping at my dad's house (seems dad needs a new router too). The ha also doesn't have BT and cost-wise a BT would make up for the $40 price difference in the ha and the he. The conclusion? The he is better value for money, although the ha is a solid investment for something light and portable for someone who doesn't need the extra 2-hrs battery life, the BT or the wireless n. The price difference is so minimal that it mainly boils down to how much you like or dislike the position of the scroll buttons on ha. The size of the screen means you will be using these button a lot. UPDATE Sept 27,2009: I just saw the Canadian keyboard layout (for Amazon.ca shoppers that read the reviews on the US site) of the Asus1000ha and it has some slightly different keys mainly an Alt-char function key to switch into French, and most importantly the arrow keys are the same layout (upside-down T) as the 1000he. The Alt-char functions are printed on each key in green and while clearly visible and very useful, seem to make the keyboard look rather busy. The body of the ha seems to be the same shiny finish as the he. Perhaps this is the latest shipment of the ha model? Or maybe it's just the Canadian version of the ha that has the shiny exterior.

I don't know why people compare this to $1000 laptops,

Portable, plenty of storage for netbook, good battery life.I'm not sure why people insist on comparing the $300 netbook to a $1000 mac. This is less than 1/3 of the price. No pun intended, but let's compare apples to apples. This is fine for web surfing, emails, and ms office on the go. More functional than a PDA, but less powerful compared to a laptop.

I have no problems what so ever as far as performance and stability. The only biggest concern is that when i type i can see the whole body of the keyboard shaky. I bought the chiclet keyboard when i saw apple have the same, but the quality of workmanship at asus is way pathetic vs apple. I think they need to re-design this for sure, users won't like it. I have typically : Yahoo and MSN messangers and Skype and 3-4 tabs of Firefox running all at the same time with no issues, although the CPU is running at about 80% when i use skype with video. So for performance its great for my use. Also this netbook starts to have choppy video when i try any HD video. I expect that, afterall when do you expect out of a 1.6Ghz single core CPU, however regualar youtube videos runs fine. Overall i am happy but disappointed from Asus for the chiclet keyboard.

This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10.1-Inch Fine Ebony Netbook - 7 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
Barely acceptable considering its price, but, at least the model that I bought, has several problem features (in order of increasing inconvenience):(1) The keys are painted gray against a black background. Poor visibility unless you have intense lighting. (2) There is no pilot lamp for Caps Lock. Thus to find out the status you need to test type and then maybe delete. Yes, you can download a third party free program to put an icon on the desktop, but you have to activate it every time you need it. (3) No matter how hard I tried it was impossible to disable the touch pad and use an external mouse. Even when the touch pad's app said "Disabled" the darn thing was still active. I even removed the touch pad's app and still nothing. Thus, the pointer jumped messing up a document being composed if my thumb accidentally brushed against the pad. (4) The System Restore feature does not work. I tried several Windows XP Restore points and every time I got the irritating message: "Your computer cannot be restored to SetPoint xyz"! (5) The System Recovery using the hard disk partition says "Disable Boot Booster in BIOS" first. How can an ordinary user do that without specific instructions? Regretted buying this PC and gave it away in frustration.

I like the netbook quite a bit - just much easier to carry around instead of a laptop. Two concerns: I don't seem to get 7 hours on the battery (more like 5.5, which is not bad, but, still, not what I thought I was buying) and the mousepad is super-sensitive (and that might just be me getting used to a different feel than my current laptop). But the product is very good, and the delivery was just as scheduled!

6 mos.: button failure, touch pad failure, hard drive failure,
By Stephen B. (Brooklyn, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10.1-Inch Fine Ebony Netbook - 7 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I ordered this laptop 6 months ago from Amazon, and was initially pleased except for a few things:- battery life quickly dropped from "7-8 hours" to more like 3.5-4, even with screen brightness down and power-saving battery setting - the right Shift key, as everyone says, is a phenomenal pain, and takes a week or so to adjust to - the wifi signal was inevitably weaker than I would get with other laptops in a side-by-side comparison About three months in, the left button below the touch pad stopped working. A problem, but I adjusted to using just the touch pad. Then the touch pad began acting up -- not releasing when I released my finger, etc. I switched to using a portable mouse more often and got ready to send it in for a repair. Not soon enough. The hard drive died two nights ago. No warning, no trauma, just a blank screen and no more whirring sound. The BIOS doesn't find it, and ruling out a few other things means it's fried, along with months of work. (Back your data up TODAY, people.) This is the last Asus product I ever buy.

This review is from: ASUS Eee PC 1000HA 10.1-Inch Pearl White Netbook - 7 Hour Battery Life (Personal Computers)
I am actually very disappointed with this product. I did some research and made sure it was ok from others' review and when i got it, i was excited but noticed it was a bit slow. I continued to check to make sure the memory and harddrive were correct as indicated and there didn't seem to be any problems either; so I took with me on the road.problems I have experienced 1. battery only last 3.5 hours; not as marketed 7 hours 2. as a new computer, opening the application is quite slow when the computer just reboots 3. blue screen within 7 days and I did not even install any other softwares. I have only been using interet & MSN messenger and downloading pictures from my camera, which is way slow 4. downloading pictures through USB (not the SD card slot) takes more than an hour for some 500MB files???!!! 5. I am hearing noises from the computer, I am guessing it's from the HD but since I am on the road I am not able to have an expert to check and confirm It is light and stylish I have to say, but as a new computer, it shouldn't work so un-professionally. I have had Acer and Dell and I understood after a year or so the performance is as not ideal as new, but this EPC... it's worse than the performances of my old computers now... I am going to have to return if problem continues. |
