The ultimate fantasy fulfillment for chocolate-lovers, 1001 Chocolate Treats packs 3,000,000 sinfully delicious calories into one volume. And every one of them will satisfy the craving for chocolate that strikes all of us at one time or another.

Mouthwatering photographs capture every glorious chocolate temptation in rich, seductive color. And what temptations they are! Cookie-lovers will find brownies galore, old-fashioned favorites like chocolate-chip cookies and bars, chocolate rum bars, and chocolate macaroons, and delightful surprises like chocolate pfeffernuesse, toasted coconut cookies with chocolate chips, and white chocolate meringues. A 20-minute chocolate cake offers almost instant relief when nothing but a slice of cake will do; French silk pie, Black Forest cherry torte, dark chocolate cheesecake, bitter chocolate mousse are just some of the confections perfect for bringing an elegant dinner party to unforgettable climax; and easy recipes for puddings, ice creams, and dessert toppings—including hot fudge, chocolate peanut butter, Kahlúa cocoa, and other special sauces—make it easy to end even everyday meals on a high-note. A section on beverages features dozens of delicious possibilities for every time of day and every season of the year—from Mexican-style coffee to hot chocolate mocha to spiced hot cocoa to Brazilian iced chocolate and chocolate mint cooler. And for gift-giving (or family snacking), there's a host of recipes for fudge, truffles, brittles, drops, and other favorite candies.

1001 Chocolate Treats covers all the ins-and-outs of cooking with chocolate, including comprehensive information on the different types of chocolate and cocoas available in groceries stores and specialty markets, invaluable instructions on various ways of melting and tempering chocolate, and tips on baking and assembling cakes, pies, and tortes.

More About the Author

My cooking/baking carrier was handed down from my mother and father. I baked my first cookies in 1943, in grade school in Buffalo. New York. Although I have had thirty seven major occupations, and five companies of my own, I have always returned to cooking as my love and profession. I start to write and prepare the cookbooks when I became disallusion by the cost per recipe of the cookbooks then on sale. Why should I, why should anyone pay two and three dollars for a recipe because it is printed in a book with fancy pictures. I made it my goal with my first cookbook, to prepare a cookbook whereby the buyer would be paying only pennies for what they had in the past paid dollars for. This has been my one goal since the first page crossed my computer screen.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the simple to the sublime, March 28, 1998
By

This review is from: 1001 Chocolate Treats: The Ultimate Collection of Cakes, Pies, Confections, Drinks, Cookies, Candies, Sauces, Ice Creams, Puddings, and Everything Else Chocolate (Hardcover)
What do applesauce, cinnamon, chocolate and creme de menthe have in common? How about amaretto, hazelnuts and sourdough bread crumbs? They are the unusual - yet delicious - ingredients included in the makings of an Applesauce Chocolate Cake (#44) and a Chocolate Orange-Flavored Cake with Hazelnuts (#138). They are but two of the unique recipes found in 1001 Chocolate Treats. First of all, the names of the various cookies, pies, cakes and ice creams alone can make you mad with anticipation, but the full-color illustrations of the treats are what propelled me out the door in search of an all-night supermarket stocked with kiwi fruit in the middle of March! Pictures are important. As one ancient Chinese proverb puts it: "If it don't pass the eye test, it will never make it to the taste test." (Actually, my mom used to say that - and, yes, she is Chinese.) However, the photos aren't so sophisticated that you feel as though you have to have a degree in culinary arts in order to try out the recipes in your own kitchen. They look like treats that anyone's grandmother can make - it's just that we may never have thought of using sourdough crumbs in a chocolate cake before. And if cakes don't do it for you, how about a slice of Chocolate Cherry Truffle Pie (#580) or White Chocolate Pie (#645-my favorite)? In any case, the book is definitely a delight to read and the recipes, easy to follow. Chocolate- lovers would do well to add it to their collection. Actually, there are 1010 recipes in the book. Apparently, the editors had a hard time deciding which recipes to exclude. You will see why.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lots of great recipes, but horrible index ruins it, November 23, 2002

This review is from: 1001 Chocolate Treats: The Ultimate Collection of Cakes, Pies, Confections, Drinks, Cookies, Candies, Sauces, Ice Creams, Puddings, and Everything Else Chocolate (Hardcover)
With over 1,000 recipes, this book is undoubtably the most extensive chocolate cookbook I've ever seen. You name it, it has it! But don't be surprised if you can't find the recipe you're looking for.

The index for this book is absolutely the worst I have ever seen in any book, because it only references ingredients, not the recipes themselves. It took me almost ten minutes to find a recipe for chocolate brownies, because I had to scan entire chapters from beginning to end until I found it. I can guarantee you that you will go insane trying to find a particular recipe in this book. That's why I gave it only three stars. It would have gotten five stars otherwise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Cookbook!, May 9, 2000

This review is from: 1001 Chocolate Treats: The Ultimate Collection of Cakes, Pies, Confections, Drinks, Cookies, Candies, Sauces, Ice Creams, Puddings, and Everything Else Chocolate (Hardcover)
A wonderful collection of chocolate recipes, from numerous chocolate cakes to the unusual chocolate chili! I don't recommend the chili (it was a little too strange for my taste), but most of the other recipes are excellent! The index could be a little better, but overall the book is excellent. Lots of pictures to drool over -- don't read this cookbook if you are hungry; you might end up taking a bite out of it!
