5.0 out of 5 stars From the simple to the sublime
What do applesauce, cinnamon, chocolate and creme de menthe have in common? How about amaretto, hazelnuts and sourdough bread crumbs? They are the unusual - yet delicious - ingredients included in the makings of an Applesauce Chocolate Cake (#44) and a Chocolate Orange-Flavored Cake with Hazelnuts (#138). They are but two of the unique recipes found in 1001 Chocolate...

With over 1,000 recipes, this book is undoubtably the most extensive chocolate cookbook I've ever seen. You name it, it has it! But don't be surprised if you can't find the recipe you're looking for.

They are but two of the unique recipes found in 1001 Chocolate Treats. First of all, the names of the various cookies, pies, cakes and ice creams alone can make you mad with anticipation, but the full-color illustrations of the treats are what propelled me out the door in search of an all-night supermarket stocked with kiwi fruit in the middle of March! Pictures are important. As one ancient Chinese proverb puts it: "If it don't pass the eye test, it will never make it to the taste test." (Actually, my mom used to say that - and, yes, she is Chinese.) However, the photos aren't so sophisticated that you feel as though you have to have a degree in culinary arts in order to try out the recipes in your own kitchen. They look like treats that anyone's grandmother can make - it's just that we may never have thought of using sourdough crumbs in a chocolate cake before. And if cakes don't do it for you, how about a slice of Chocolate Cherry Truffle Pie (#580) or White Chocolate Pie (#645-my favorite)? In any case, the book is definitely a delight to read and the recipes, easy to follow. Chocolate- lovers would do well to add it to their collection. Actually, there are 1010 recipes in the book. Apparently, the editors had a hard time deciding which recipes to exclude. You will see why.

With over 1,000 recipes, this book is undoubtably the most extensive chocolate cookbook I've ever seen. You name it, it has it! But don't be surprised if you can't find the recipe you're looking for.

The index for this book is absolutely the worst I have ever seen in any book, because it only references ingredients, not the recipes themselves. It took me almost ten minutes to find a recipe for chocolate brownies, because I had to scan entire chapters from beginning to end until I found it. I can guarantee you that you will go insane trying to find a particular recipe in this book. That's why I gave it only three stars. It would have gotten five stars otherwise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Delicious Cookbook!, May 9, 2000

A wonderful collection of chocolate recipes, from numerous chocolate cakes to the unusual chocolate chili! I don't recommend the chili (it was a little too strange for my taste), but most of the other recipes are excellent! The index could be a little better, but overall the book is excellent. Lots of pictures to drool over -- don't read this cookbook if you are hungry; you might end up taking a bite out of it!

I have already made one cake from this book and it turned out very well. There are so many recipes and I know there are many things that I'll never make, but who cares it's fun to have a book with such an extensive selection of recipes and with pitures too.

I found this book absolute heaven. Out of all my cookbooks this one is getting tons of usage. The recipes are easy to follow and the pictures are the best. Probably the most extensive collection of chocolate recipes ever! Don't let this pass you by. Definitely worth the money!

I love chocolate and fess up so do you! This is a great book and if you are a novice or an experienced baker you will get rave reviews from all of the taste testers ( and there will be many ) when you make just about any of the recipes in this book.
Quite a few of my holiday cookies are about to be baked.

4.0 out of 5 stars The recipes are good, but index could be better, September 2, 2000
This review is from: 1001 Chocolate Treats: The Ultimate Collection of Cakes, Pies, Confections, Drinks, Cookies, Candies, Sauces, Ice Creams, Puddings, and Everything Else Chocolate (Hardcover)
I highly enjoyed reading this book. There are so many recipes that it was a bit overwhelming, but for those looking for inspiration as well as a specific thing to bake, this is a great volume to thumb through. Chocolate lovers like myself can also moan in delight over just the thought of all that chocolate!

However, as another reader pointed out, the index leaves something to be desired. My suggestion is to go through the book, and put little sticky notes on recipes you know you are highly interested in or will definitely make. It's terrible that it has to come to that, but honestly the recipes are worth looking for!

Index is the worse I have ever seen, no organization, saw recipe for chocolate eclaires and it wasn't listed in index. Who wants to know every page that bittersweet chocolate etc. is mentioned. Need comprehensive index of recipies!
