Book Description

0195167759 978-0195167757 June 3, 2004
1001 Computer Words You Need to Know explains and illuminates the essential vocabulary of computers and the Internet. This comprehensive, but never condescending guide to the language of the electronic age carefully defines and explains every term with a sample sentence, and many entries have supplementary notes. In addition, the book includes a number of quick miniguides to managing your online life - dealing with Windows and Macs (and sometimes *nix), burning CDs and downloading files, word processing, spread-sheeting, connecting to the Internet (dialup, cable, DSL, wireless) surfing, IMing and emailing, taking digital photos, coping with networks, memory, and drives, and just plain coping with your computer.
The backmatter contains an extensive list of helpful websites and an essay about online language and etiquette.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Pournelle, a columnist for Byte Magazine, defines and demystifies computer terms that non-techies commonly encounter as they deal with Windows and Mac operating systems, burn CDs and download files, share MP3s, take digital pictures, and use word processing and spreadsheet software." -- SciTech Booknews

More About the Author

I write science fact and fiction. Themes range from trivial amusements to how to save the world. In 1980 I predicted that by the year 2000 anyone in Western Civilization would be able to get the answer to any question that can be answered; that happened a bit faster than I thought it would. My column in BYTE is the longest running column in the computer industry.

5.0 out of 5 stars One word. WOW!, June 14, 2004
By
This review is from: 1001 Computer Words You Need to Know (1001 Words You Need to Know) (Hardcover)
One word WOW! This book has every term that I have ever seen and includes examples that are real easy to picture. This book has I would say over 2,000 different entries. It even gives a pronounciation key so you know how they are pronounced. It also has a table of contents for easy access and is alphabetized. It even has parts on Troubleshooting, Buying Computers, Spam, Online shopping, and just about everything else you can imagine. I recommend this book to everyone even if you are not in with computers. This book provides a great detail on everything. It even tells you what part of speech it is. It even tells you abbreviations and slang and it gives the basic emotions and tells you how to do them. It also gives websites you should know. Too many great things about this book to list. Just everybody it's worth the $14. Everyone needs this book. It is like a Spanish-English dictionary.

4.0 out of 5 stars Useful but not a panacea, January 10, 2012

This review is from: 1001 Computer Words You Need to Know (1001 Words You Need to Know) (Hardcover)
The definitions contain words I don't know. The book is right next to my computer, and I am looking up the words I don't know (and the words in the definitions I don't know). In time, after becoming more computer literate, I might give this book 5 stars. Have found the prose sections helpful indeed.
