4.0 out of 5 stars The Foods You Wish You Ate!, July 8, 2011

Stop what you're doing and buy this book: 1,001 Foods You Must Taste Before you Die. Why? The simple answer is that it's an amazing book that will enlighten you to 1,001 (mostly kosher) foods that you've probably never heard of or considered, including a bevy of baked goods and grains that are, yes, you guessed it, gluten free!

I was handed this book while spending a Shabbat in Neve Daniel this past week, and the mastermind behind Chocoholique Liqueur opened my eyes to something he probably wasn't planning on: baked goods that are traditionally gluten-free, like Injera and Crumpets.

Injera is a "yeast-risen flatbread with a unique, slightly spongy texture. Traditionally made out of teff flour and is a national dish in Ethiopia and Eritrea. A similar variant is eaten in Somalia (where it is called canjeero or lahooh) and Yemen (where it is known as lahoh)." I actually had Injera once while visiting my friend John in Philly, and Ethiopian was some of the best cuisine I've ever had. A lot of the modern stuff is made with regular wheat flour, but those who do it traditional and do it right do it with teff flour. Now? To find some Bob's Red Mill Teff Flour! I feel like injera would be great as a wrap substitute.

Crumpets, as you surely know, are a very British baked good that are similar to injera in that it has a spongey quality. You can buy them at Trader Joe's, which I used to do, and last I checked they have a hechsher, but for those who can't handle gluten, you will have to make your own. Here's one Crumpet recipe that I haven't tried but fully intend to from AuntJayne's Blog.

The book highlights a lot of interesting breads and pancake-type foods from around the world based on grains you and I have never heard of (like teff), so the book is truly worth your money and your time.

Remember: Once upon a time, we didn't live in a milk-consuming, wheat-heavy society. We relied on ancient and unique grains that aren't glutenful. We just have to get back to those ancient, delicious foods!

While interesting, the book was a bit of a let down, with foods such as Haas avocado as a food you "must" taste. More of an example of a food dictionary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Kind of boring...., January 27, 2011

My boyfriend is really into different recipes and trying new things so I thought he would love this book but I was sadly disappointed when he didnt really pick it up and read it. He said it was very boring and its hard to get a hold of any of the items in the book. It makes a nice addition to our bookshelf though!

I thought this was going to be book about different dishes from places all over the world that you should absolutely try. Instead it was a very boring book about vegetables, fruits, breads, etc. that you should try. Not actually dishes. I was disappointed.
