2.0 out of 5 stars GOOD INTENTIONS BUT A WEAK, DISORGANIZED EFFORT, July 24, 1999

This review is from: 1001 Incredible Tennis Games, Drills & Tips: A Super Abundance of Information for Every Teaching Professional & Tennis Enthusiast (Paperback)
I found this book to have GOOD INTENTIONS but is rather WEAK inmany respects. First, it attempts to be comprehensive but is ratherDIFFICULT TO READ and is POORLY ORGANIZED. It appears to be many NOTES over the years. There is a WEALTH OF IDEAS but LITTLE COHESION. Second, I don't understand how notes are systematically attributed; some games are not correctedly attributed. Third, the diagrams are poor (although I have seen worst even in some excellent books). Fourth, RESEARCH APPEARS VERY LIMITED as many excellent resources were not cited nor presumably researched -- what were the criteria for picking tips? drills? Many excellent games/drills/tips were not present. There appear to lots of holes in coverage. It looks like a dozen books and magazines were read together and the contents were copied straight out with about 10% originality. Fifth, EDITING IS A MAJOR PROBLEM with the various typos (possibly on every other page!) and organizational structure (the book appears to be self-published). The table of contents is missing a list of drills/games for peewees and munchkins. Last, the author's call for the USPTA and USPTR pros to "wake up" is a mystery since the author appears not to be a member of either (see 1999 USPTA or USPTR handbooks).

This book is clearly a first draft and needs cleaning up! OK FOR PLAYERS IF YOU CAN GET IT CHEAP ...it's ok since it combines ideas from other resources. OK FOR THE ENTRY LEVEL TEACHING PRO OR COACH but clearly a mediocre resource. NOT RECOMMENDED FOR SERIOUS, EXPERIENCED TEACHING PROS. I think my 2 stars rating is a bit generous.

1.0 out of 5 stars Did we read the same book?, July 11, 2000

This review is from: 1001 Incredible Tennis Games, Drills & Tips: A Super Abundance of Information for Every Teaching Professional & Tennis Enthusiast (Paperback)
First of all, the book is filled with TYPOS! I can't believe any publisher or editor would let this book hit the stands in the first place. Most of the drills require more than two players (often difficult to come by) and it is geared much more towards the tennis coach than the every day player. I would only recommend this book if you don't mind typos and are coaching fairly large groups. There are a couple of decent drills, but definitely not worth the time or money.

I want to thank Tina for writing an exciting and incredibly useful tool. I have been practicing the drills and tips in her book for the last six months and it has improved my own game by volumes. I would suggest it to everyone from the serious player to the person who just wants to add some activity and fun to their lives. It is well worth the money. Thanks Tina!!!!!
