3.0 out of 5 stars lacks pronunciation guide
I found this book helpful, it is more than comprehensive in terms of its scope and the categories make it easy to navigate. My big problem with this compilation is that there is no pronunciation given in the definitions, so there is no way to know how each English word is to be pronounced. This is so important because English pronunciation is very irregular. I had some...

When I recieved it I was suprised and impressed what a wonderful learning tool it is. For any begining spanish students, there are very useful words that you won't find in 1st and 2nd year textbooks that are quite important. The sentences they use really do bring quite a bit of clarity to the use of the word. Also the sentences themselves have many words to help increase your vocabulary. Buy this book. It is very much worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Words you can rely on!, August 8, 2003

This book is very practical. It contains a good selection of commonly used words in the English language. It is a handy book that you can take anywhere with you. It is indeed a very useful, thin dictionary that not only provides the meaning of each word listed, but also gives you a sentence using each word in its right context. Good value as well.

I teach English in Buenos Aires. I bought this book for my students. It is a great book because it explains the English slang in Spanish so they can relate to it.

My big problem with this compilation is that there is no pronunciation given in the definitions, so there is no way to know how each English word is to be pronounced. This is so important because English pronunciation is very irregular. I had some of my ESL students just throw this book out because they couldn't make anything of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing!, February 14, 2007
This review is from: 1001 Palabras Inglesas Mas Utiles Para Hispanoparlantes (Paperback)
I bought this book for my wife who is a native Spanish speaker that learned English by speaking and not from classes, so her English vocablulary is limited. So I thought that this book would have several words she didn't know. Going through the entire book, I was only unfamiliar with less than a handful and we felt that that it did not give anything more than my basic Spanish/English dictionary. Another complaint is that Amazon sells it for $3.99 which along with the shipping makes it cost over $ 6.00 but the book itself is marked $2.00. Also, in many instances a word has more than one meaning but the author was lax in not providing all meanings as a good dictionary would.

The good thing about it is that it simplifies culling out of a dictionary for the beginning student, some of the very common words. As I would prefer to have a pocket dictionary with me I think it is an unnecessary expense to have to also add this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most useful books I have found in 10 years of studying Spanish., March 10, 2011

This is one of the most useful books I have found in over 10 years of studying Spanish. It is available in both English and Spanish formats and is equally useful for teaching English to Spanish speakers. The examples, for the most part, are genuinely useful phrases. Very reasonably priced.

I don't know why Amazon limits the number of copies to 3 per purchase, but sooner or later I will have enough for my whole English class in Nicaragua.

I bought this book to help tutor English, and my student couldn't put it down. It has useful vocabulary, and uses each word in a simple sentence in both English and Spanish. For the price, I couldn't be more pleased.

3.0 out of 5 stars doesn't seem to be for Spanish speakers just starting to learn English, June 13, 2011

As an English speaker who knows a good bit about Spanish but not a whole lot, I find this book very helpful. Spanish pronunciation isn't hard for me (it really shouldn't be hard for any English speaker), I know Spanish grammar pretty well, and I can usually see and hear the relationships between many Spanish words and English words, so reading the Spanish sentences in the book isn't that difficult for me. However, I can see where Spanish speakers who are just starting to learn English could have a lot more trouble with the book. The facts that many of the sentences (in Spanish and in English) are pretty long, and that English pronunciation and spelling are both highly irregular, makes a book that has no pronunciation guide very difficult if not impossible for beginning English students to use. (Just the fact that Spanish spelling and pronunciation are so much more regular should make the sentences much easier for English speakers just starting to learn Spanish.) It seems to be more for English students who already know or can deduce, at least approximately, how the English words are pronounced. Also, the book is very thin, and I think I may have overpaid somewhat for it (even though I do find it very helpful). The book may be good for Spanish speakers who already have some understanding of English (or vice versa), but I don't think that it will aid beginning English students very much, if at all.
