Book Description

1001 Things March 20, 2007

When it's time for your kids to leave home, will they be ready to face the world? Will they be able to handle the NYC subway system? Will they have experienced the challenge of a summer career camp? Will they be able to compare civilizations and governments around the world? Will their imaginations have been sparked in a foreign land? Will they know that tamales aren't edible until they take the cornstalk off?

In 1001 Things Your Kids Should See & Do Before They Leave Home, best-selling author Harry H. Harrison Jr. has compiled the definitive book for preparing a child for adulthood. There's so much to do…and so little time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pearls to get you thinking ..., January 8, 2012
This review is from: 1001 Things Your Kids Should See and Do (Paperback)
I think some of the negative reviews are a little short-sided. With the size of this book, what else could there be but little pearls to make you think. Some don't like the religious pretext. The author has taken a clear path, a stance on what he thinks is important. Right or wrong, at least he picked a way and stuck with it - I think that maybe sometimes we get into a mode where everyone wins, everyone gets a trophy. Well life isn't that way, not everybody wins and you don't get a prize for kinda sorta trying ... remember to teach our children how to cope, how to deal with bullies, how to deal with disappointment. Teach them to be gracious when they win and graceful when they don't. Teach them that the world, for what it is; can be a wonderful place if you are willing to look for it -- willing to work for it.

I happen to agree with the pragmatism in the book. #705 with the studying a practical major is dead on; if you are making a living with doing what you studied for and it's 'off the beaten path' consider yourself the exception rather than the rule. In any case if you don't like some of the rules, then change them. You are the parent, but at least it'll have you thinking about some long range goals for you and your family as you grow together.

This review is from: 1001 Things Your Kids Should See and Do (Paperback)
This book could not be delivered to Puerto Rico so I had it delivered to my Parents' house in Philadelphia my mom opened it and loved it and had me order 3 more. It was received w/in a reasonable time frame and it was in perfect condition. When I finally received it I could not put it down has some cool info on things to do some are free and inexpensive and others are not. It not mainly for kids which was my impression-for example one tip says that they need to buy liability ins for their car so there are things to do for really BIG kids too.
