5.0 out of 5 stars Superb
If you are anything like me, you buy four or five books in the hope that one will provide the information you need. Typically three out of five are not much use. This one is concise, to the point, covers the major stuff and is ideal for beginners. Real high speed learning and productivity.

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't read it, even if you get it for free.
I saw this book in the bargin book section of the computer store so I picked it up. It is HARD to find a good book on VB and this book is no exception. It has no depth. Each tip starts with the words "In Tip xxx, you learned blah, blah, blah". The author loves to call UDTs, structures. This isn't C, its Visual Basic. In one example (350 something). The author...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great For Beginners and Intermediate, July 28, 1999
By
This review is from: 1001 Visual Basic Programmer's Tips (Paperback)
This book is both a great introduction to VB for newbies and a great reference for VB gunslingers like myself.

For the rookie, it's a step-by-step introduction to VB. Each "tip" is a mini-lesson, and later lessons build on earlier ones. The writing is clean and easy to understand, and the code examples are easy to follow.

For the veteran, it's a fantastic reference ("What's the syntax for declaring an RDO recordset again?"). The index makes it very easy to find the information you are looking for, and the sequential nature of the lessons ensures that the item you are searching for will be in the midst of a larger discussion of the general topic.

This book is large; not just thick, but actually big. This is because the pages are printed in a large, easy-to-read font.

Well done! I only wish that Jamsa would do a "1,001 ASP Programmer's Tips".

4.0 out of 5 stars Good tutorial of Visual Basic for anyone learning VB, October 13, 1998
This review is from: 1001 Visual Basic Programmer's Tips (Paperback)
I've been programming in basic for years, stepping up to Visual Basic is much easier with that background. This book has many nice tips in it for anyone who is collecting information on VB. I just purchased his source code book and will comment about that later. Anyone serious about programming knows that you'll be picking up many books on the programming topic before you could write one. Even then, usually you won't be able to keep up with the software house's next version! Rp

4.0 out of 5 stars A great reference, poor teaching tool, October 18, 1998

This review is from: 1001 Visual Basic Programmer's Tips (Paperback)
Of all the reviews, no one has learned that this is not a tutorial book. The code and frankly everything in this book is spread out to the point that its waste to learn from;however, with a 21 day book this book is invaluable, making the easy-cheesy 3 week books a little less confusing. This book should be and only used to show programming context and what each function is used for, not why or how it works. This book goes into ActiveX for a good 20 or so tips(a lot for 1 specific topic) and shows context and how to use the controls. NOT WHY THEY WORK!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book for beginners to intermediate level programmers., October 15, 1998

Very well organized. Covers all the major topics with plenty of code examples. Jamsa & Klander really put together a fine set of examples with very good explanations. I use this book every day, and recommend it to anyone.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding VB, August 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 1001 Visual Basic Programmer's Tips (Paperback)
Content of the book is almost the same as on-line help in VB, but all topics are explained MUCH BETTER. If you use on-line help in VB, buy this book right now. Depending on our experience you can skip first tips, but then go through each tip. After this book VB will be a toy for you. I am very happy with this book. It is on my table all time. Tips are not tricky, but for regular everyday work.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Beginner's Dream, July 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 1001 Visual Basic Programmer's Tips (Paperback)
The first book on the language that you should get? Maybe. But if you're looking for advanced and "pushing the envelope" stuff, you're better off somewhere else. Every topic starts off great, but falls short when it comes to examples. They show the proper format for each line of code, but no real-world examples. It's like if they couldn't write some code themselves and only copied what the Help file already teaches you. The CD is useless. There are many options out there and this one is around the middle of my list.

1.0 out of 5 stars Title is misleading - content is repetitious., July 17, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 1001 Visual Basic Programmer's Tips (Paperback)
This is not a tips and tricks book - it is an introductory VB programming book. Because it's broken down into 1001 small bits, the same information is often repeated in many places. It also feels like they had to stretch to get to the magic number of 1001.
