5.0 out of 5 stars A Book To Warm Your Heart, May 7, 2002
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 101 Amazing Things About God (Mass Market Paperback)
This book arrived from amazon and was read cover to cover all in one evening. It's a tiny volume, easy to read. Each little chapter is an aphorism about God, based on a verse of Scripture, with a brief personalized comment by the author. In some cases she will share a longer anecdote from her life, and in doing so she always reveals something very vulnerable and touching about herself. This is a very sweet book but it also has a depth that comes from the author's real struggles and heartaches. It is real without being preachy or the least bit solemn. You need to read this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny As Well As Thought Provoking, October 24, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Amazing Things About God (Mass Market Paperback)
Not being a fan of preachy religious books, I must say that I loved this quick read. The author shares hilarious life stories in such a way that makes faith less threatening. If you like Anne Lamont, then you'll love this woman's writing too. It reads like a sitcom with pieces of theology offered along the way. Can't wait to read more!

I saw Marsha Marks being interviewed on Life Today, James and Betty Robison's tv show a few weeks ago, and I so enjoyed her interview I immediately ordered her three books, and plan to get the next one when it comes out in May. I love "10l Amazing Things About God"...I got it in the mail yesterday and read it last night. Refreshing, witty and wonderful and such a relief to know how God really feels about us. I have already loaned the book to a co-worker who I think will enjoy it too and plan to get a few more for birthday gifts. Thanks Marsha, and keep writing!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mallowcups For Marsha, April 15, 2003
This review is from: 101 Amazing Things About God (Mass Market Paperback)
I finally got this book to see what the fuss was all about.

You know the part in Shawshank Redemption, where Tim Robbins comes out and stands in the rain? That's what this book was to me. Pure saturating relief. This is it, this is what we're looking for when we're looking for God. We want things we recognize. We want to be able to say, I knew He was like that all along, I just knew. Marsha Marks has selected 101 times He has intersected her days and has put them in a prose so delightful and enjoyable I wish it was 1001 things.

Kids came running to see what I was laughing about when I read some parts. I'm glad that's what Marsha did with this little volume, she made God to be an everyday deal, with all the joy and hilarity and yeah, heartache it means. Thanks, Marsha. I'd share a pack of Mallowcups with you.

Marsha Mark's book is a pleasure to read. It is humorous and engaging all while inspiring one to greater faith. 101 Amazing Things About God is a treasure you will want to share with your friends, Christian and non Christian alike. For all of us who make mistakes (everyone)or want something that seems impossible (everyone)this book is a must have. God is truly amazing and Mark's is able to tell it in an honest way that is not the least bit preachy.
I highly recommend this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Part Lucille Ball, Part Billy Graham, November 19, 2001

With Shades of Anne Lamott, this writer captures us into her world and the world of her faith, in often humorous stories that leave you thinking your reading a script from "I Love Lucy." Her Chritianity is warm and inclusive (the book is dedicated to an atheist) you are drawn to her even if you're not a believer. I love this book and bought it for all my friends.

5.0 out of 5 stars A ready source of encouragement..., October 4, 2004
This review is from: 101 Amazing Things About God (Mass Market Paperback)
In the study of the spiritual disciplines, it is critical that we know who we are being disciplined for. We must know the nature and character of the person we are devoting ourselves to. What is it about this person that should warrant such a drastic personal response from us? As Boa states, "The most basic of all these truths is the character of God, and in this holy ground the Christian life is rooted." 101 Amazing Things About God addresses the character of God in a very real and practical way.

The author tells us that this book is dedicated to her atheist friend. It is partially intended then to be somewhat evangelistic in that even the lost can see God's love in His actions. It is also intended to show how different people can and will see God from different perspectives.

The main theme of the book is how the author has personally experienced or personally observed the various aspects of God at work in the lives of people. She has a keen eye for observing and then seeing God at work in different situations.

I can sometimes assess the value of a book to me personally by going back to see the things that I had highlighted or marked in some way. A couple of nuggets of wisdom that I gleaned were;

1) "God finds it easier to pour Himself into those who are emptied of self rather than those being full of themselves".
2) "He did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world and He didn't send me into the world to condemn the world either".

The book accomplishes its goal of shedding some light on the nature of God and His work by use of simple, easy to understand language, and insightful personal observation.

It is always encouraging to see how fellow Christians can give personal testimony of God's work in their lives. It helps to strengthen the rest of us, especially when we are going through something that someone else has endured before us.

Warren Wiersbee notes, "This book...is practical theology in digestible doses". I would agree with his observation.

This is a wonderful short read. It is simple and straightforward and at times can pull on the heartstrings of the reader. This book can be used as a quick devotional reference or simply as a ready source of encouragement.

My wife Maribelle and I love this book! It is inspirational reading and well written. The stories have many emotions and tie them wonderfully together with God's wisdom and a journey of faith. It reminded me of what I could draw from my belief in God, and how to be a better person. Everybody can relate to the stories in this book.

I would recommend this book for anybody, regardless of their religion. We cannot wait until Marsha's next book!
