5.0 out of 5 stars A FANTASTIC reference for "stay at home moms"
I purchased this book a few months back at one of the lowest points in my life. I had just chosen to put in my resignation at a major corporation, Not because of the job itself, but because of continuing increase in childcare expenses. Like many parents who both work, unless you are fortunate enough to have family or friends who watch your children at little or no fee...

2.0 out of 5 stars This book is quite worthless
Priscilla Y. Huff gives you practical advice on how to work from home and take care of your family. But if you were a degreed professional prior to being a mom, this is not the book for you. But according to the book, you should pursue a home business in candlemaking or crafts. But this is the 2000's, not the 1950's, Priscilla! Many of young professionals are educated...

Many of young professionals are educated in far different arenas than were portrayed here! And I also agree with a reader from Illinois: If you already have the credentials to run your own home health agency, you don't need this book to suggest it. And if you don't this suggestion is worthless.

Take my advice, ladies, do not buy this book. There are a lot of the generic home-based business books; with the careers outlined in them, you might actually have the opportunity to make a great home business.

5.0 out of 5 stars A FANTASTIC reference for "stay at home moms", January 6, 1999

I purchased this book a few months back at one of the lowest points in my life. I had just chosen to put in my resignation at a major corporation, Not because of the job itself, but because of continuing increase in childcare expenses. Like many parents who both work, unless you are fortunate enough to have family or friends who watch your children at little or no fee and at the drop of a hat, the stress level of childcare is ever increasing. This book has been an answer to my prayers. There are far more than 101 jobs based at home because of the additional business ideas listed after each entry. Many women will be amazed at what skills they have and never thought it could produce work. My only suggestion of caution is to read ALL of the book carefully, to include some of the drawbacks. Most women with a family to help support may be ready to jump at the chance for a new business. I was. And after careful consideration, my husband and I have chosen to start our own business using our computer. There is a need in our area, and the computer we spent so much money on for sheer hobby is now producing a second income. Is it making us a million? Of course not. But is it legitimate, honest, legal, and productive? You bet it is.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money, August 7, 1999

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book has some of the most ludicrous suggestions and inflated earning potentials of any book of its kind. If you quarter the earning potential and figure working 16 hour days, sometimes 7 days a week, you might have an idea what it would take to make a living using most of these suggestions. Just one example should suffice--run a home health agency from your home with a potential income of $100,000+ a year and the first "helpful tip" is to check licensing laws in your area. If you already have the credentials to run your own home health agency, you don't need this book to suggest it. If you don't this suggestion is worthless. And to make $100,000+--it would take years of 80-hour weeks and scads of employees to reach that income level. Most of the suggestions are this ridiculous. Many are meant to give stay-at-home mommies something to do while the kids are napping that will provide enough income to take the family to McDonalds and a movie once in a while. They're not meant to be careers or to provide adequate income while caring for a family. The ones that could turn into careers take huge outlays of time and often money. If you're aware of that (and this book won't mention it) and you've got the energy, stamina and desire, you can find far better books on starting your own business than this piece of fluff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loads of great info for women starting their own business., August 19, 1999
By A Customer
Huff's book presents many ideas with helpful resources to begin your research on new ventures and get you started earning money at a business you enjoy. Readers should have realistic expectations, as Huff does not promise you'll make a million dollars--but she does give enough home-business ideas that the majority of women should be able to find one that works for them. I particularly liked the resources she listed with most of her business ideas and also in the last chapter. These resources quickly helped me find the answers to the questions I needed to start my own business.

2.0 out of 5 stars Should have gone to the library, August 30, 2001

Buying this book was a waste of money... I would have done better to do research on the web or to have gone to the library. Hardly any useful information.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a book for the 21st century, May 8, 2006
This review is from: 101 Best Home-Based Businesses for Women, 3rd Edition: Everything You Need to Know About Getting Started on the Road to Success (For Fun & Profit) (Paperback)
I think that Ms Huff should rethink her strategies here.
This book is okay but does not really deal with the realities of the 21st century.
If you're looking for a book that faces the realities and challenges of today then you should read Untapped Wealth Discovered by Jeff Marquis and Kerry Harrison. This book shows you how to find those businesses that can survive and prosper in our economy. It's a book that pays special attentions to the needs and goals of women.

1.0 out of 5 stars Pass on this one, December 12, 2004
This review is from: 101 Best Home-Based Businesses for Women, 3rd Edition: Everything You Need to Know About Getting Started on the Road to Success (For Fun & Profit) (Paperback)
This book stinks. It's filled with a little of everything but not enough of the right information. Pass... if you really want to see the book check it out of the library and save the money.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good First Step, December 11, 2006
This review is from: 101 Best Home-Based Businesses for Women, 3rd Edition: Everything You Need to Know About Getting Started on the Road to Success (For Fun & Profit) (Paperback)
I conduct workshops based on my book "Capitalizing On Being Woman Owned" and in almost every class 30% of the attendees are in the first stages of starting a business or even just thinking about it. This book would be a good exploratory resource for them. Ms. Huff provides practical information for many micro-businesses. Part of the book is a "how-to" with explanations for making critical decisions. It is a great first exposure to starting a business and provides resources that will give the details. It's probably not for the woman who wants to build an international corporation. But it is for the woman who wants to start a small business that suits her personality and situation.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ideas Only - No Information, November 12, 2008
This review is from: 101 Best Home-Based Businesses for Women, 3rd Edition: Everything You Need to Know About Getting Started on the Road to Success (For Fun & Profit) (Paperback)
If you are trying to brainstorm for ideas on what TYPE of home-based business to start, then this is A book for you.(Only the first of many you will need to research....)

However, most potential entreprenuers already know what type of business they want, based on personal experience, interests, level of education, etc. This book is in no way helpful for those who fall into this category, because there is so little information on how to start up that business.

Each chapter is a brief overview of a type of home-based business. There were only two chapters that drew my eye, again based on personal experience and interest. After reading that I could be a home-based bookkeeper or a home-based interior decorator (information I already knew), I put the book away forever. A waste of time and money.

This is NOT a detailed informative reference for actual start-up, and as such is not very helpful. "Everything you need to know about getting started on the road to success" will be found in other books.
