Book Description

October 16, 2007
In 2006, Judith Durant delighted knitters everywhere with her collection One-Skein Wonders: 101 Yarn Shop Favorites. At last, knitters had a rich array of fun, festive patterns for all those yarn "orphans"— single skeins purchased on impulse or left over from long-finished projects.

With knitters clamoring for even more of these imaginative patterns, Durant has tapped into a wide circle of knitwear designers across the country to compile a totally fresh collection of enchanting projects. Once again, the excitement of small-scale possibility will attract knitters of all skill levels. Like its predecessor, 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders offers patterns for small projects that can be completed with a single skein of yarn.

These designer projects range from the adorable to the elegant. The book includes plenty of patterns for those never-can-have-enough items: hats, scarves, bags, and shawls. It also highlights the unexpected: a useful knitted notebook cover, a fun-to-wear mitered square belt with beads, and an elegant ring bearer pillow. There's something for everyone here — from the novice knitter to the experienced yarn artisan.

With patterns arranged by yarn weight, knitters will easily find broad ranges of possibilities for their particular single skeins. A full-color gallery features detailed photographs of all 101 projects, allowing knitters to browse through all the patterns quickly to find the perfect match for each skein.

The patterns in 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders are practical and fun. They're ideal weekend projects, perfect to give as gifts or wear and enjoy. Because they're small enough to fit in a tote bag, they're great to take on the run. Best of all, they offer simple solutions for that stash of single skeins every knitter has tucked away.

Whether the yarn was picked up on impulse — because it was on sale, or just too beautiful to resist — or left over from a project completed long ago, every skein of yarn cries out to be used. 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders offers the ultimate solution for converting those lonely skeins into knitted wonders.

More About the Author

In the late 1970s, Emerson College in Boston granted me a highly useful degree in theater, with a specialty in costume design. After spending several years hanging around the costume shops in New York trying to make ends meet, I was fortunate enough to land a publishing job; I've been working as an editor and writer ever since.

My mom taught me to knit when I was a young girl. The beadwork thing got serious while I was working as the book editor for Interweave Press. Many other crafty things have presented themselves along the way, and as a result I'm never bored.

Originally from Massachusetts, I spent fifteen years in New York City, then six and one-half in Colorado; the past six years have been spent back in Massachusetts. Retiring in France is a current dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great One Skein book, October 30, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders: A world of possibilities inspired by just one skein (Paperback)
I have the original One Skein book and love the projects that are in it, so I was excited when the new one came out. I was not disappointed. There are many cute projects here, many that even a beginner(I would consider myself an advanced beginner) could do. I have never made a sweater yet, but I know I could knit 3 of the 4 baby sweaters. There are many cute socks, hats and scarves too. I've already picked out 23 patterns that I would like to make some time. That's not bad when most knitting books seem to have 2-3 patterns that I would really want to make.

While there are patterns for many different weights of yarn, the largest chapter is the worsted weight chapter.

Some of my favorite patterns (and to give you an idea of what's in the book) are: magic loop minis(mini mittens, sweater, and hat), wave jumper, sock-it-to-me scarf, garter stitch loop-through scarf, pink tweed for baby(sweater), baby squash hat, child's hat with pompom, boy-oh-boy(sweater), not-your-average washcloths, new directions hat, baby basket hat, fishbowl baby hat, elizabeth's perfect hat, spiral hat, kat's hat, taos slippers, blanket buddy, waterfall scarf, cross-stitch scarf, infant's roll neck pullover, and zane's coming home sweater.

I think most knitters will find many patterns in this book that they would like to knit. A great addition to your knitting library.

4.0 out of 5 stars Taken Aback..., May 4, 2008

This review is from: 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders: A world of possibilities inspired by just one skein (Paperback)
I had considered buying both One Skein books for quite a long time. I figured that they had been very high up in the knitting book sales for a very long time, they had great reviews, and I thought that would mean something. The very first pattern that I tried (the eyelet shrug) had errors. I went to the Storey website for the errata and ended up printing out forty seven pages of errata for both books. Then, the corrections weren't even complete for the pattern that I was working on. Wow. On the flip side, I have done enough knitting to work out the errors, sometimes before they even occur. My shrug turned out terrific, and I think that I will be making quite a few more of the patterns in this book. I take apart sweaters from the thrift store for the wool, and this will be a good resource for me. Just be aware of the multitude of errors, be prepared to work around them, make notes about them, and be prepared to use these patterns again and again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Extremely poor editing, October 16, 2009
This review is from: 101 Designer One-Skein Wonders: A world of possibilities inspired by just one skein (Paperback)
I was having an unusually hard time with the Lace Spiral Scarf pattern and finally went to the publishers website. Imagine my surprise when I found SEVEN pages of corrections for this book. The scarf pattern has a mistake in 7 rows of the 16 row repeat. The cute baby Wave Jumper has 7 errors. Twenty Six of the 101 patterns are defective. It took a good hour to tape all the corrections into the book. If you buy the book, go to [...] and print out the corrections as there is no telling how long they will be available online. I will be reluctant to buy anything from this publisher again. The patterns are cute but there are just too many errors.
