5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent beginner book for both point & shoot and SLR., April 18, 2001

When I first got into photography not so very long ago, I was rather overwhelmed at the number of beginner books. I happened upon this book late one night and decided to buy it because at a glance it looked good and the price was certainly right. After closer inspection I discovered I had found a little gem.

This book is 72 pages and about the size of a big index card. It is in full color and covers the following topics: Choosing Equiptment, Basic Skills, Using the Controls, Which Lens, Choosing Film, Composing Your Picture, Using Color, Pattern and Shape, Using Natural Light, Using Flash, Photographing People, Special Subjects and Presenting Prints.

The book has a bit of a predjudice towards the 35mm SLR beginner, but even a beginner point & shoot person can learn a great deal. In short, it is a brief book that packs a punch! I highly recommend this for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Many useful tips for beginners but soon you want sth better, July 11, 2002
By
"smokingbear" (San Jose, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 101 Essential Tips on Photography (101 Essential Tips) (Paperback)
This books covers some of the most fundamental issues of photography. It concentrates more on how to take good photographs instead of how aperture, shutter speed and depth of view work together. The tips for taking good photos at different settings are useful for beginners but there is a lack of some detailed information (such as prefered exposure setting, shutter speed, etc) provided. For example, you won't find the "focus at 1/3 distance rule for maximum DOF" for taking landscape photos.

This book is very easy to understand for beginners. But if you want to learn a little bit more about how some of the most important elements of photography (such as aperture, shutter speed, DOF) work together, you should definately go look at another book "Kodak Pocket Guide to 35mm Photography" (112 pages) which contains much more information about photography than this book. And the size of that "pocket guide" is much smaller than this one so it indeed fits the pocket of your pants.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect Camera Accessory, December 20, 2002
This review is from: 101 Essential Tips on Photography (101 Essential Tips) (Paperback)
This book is small enough to fit in your pocket or camera bag. Yet, it's full of useful tips accompanied by demonstrative full color photographs. Personally, I find it to be a great reference. On vacations, I always bring it along as plane reading material so that my skills are refreshed for travel photography. It's a must have for any amateur photographer.
