Excellent beginner book for both point & shoot and SLR.,

This review is from: 101 Essential Tips on Photography (101 Essential Tips) (Paperback)
When I first got into photography not so very long ago, I was rather overwhelmed at the number of beginner books. I happened upon this book late one night and decided to buy it because at a glance it looked good and the price was certainly right. After closer inspection I discovered I had found a little gem. This book is 72 pages and about the size of a big index card. It is in full color and covers the following topics: Choosing Equiptment, Basic Skills, Using the Controls, Which Lens, Choosing Film, Composing Your Picture, Using Color, Pattern and Shape, Using Natural Light, Using Flash, Photographing People, Special Subjects and Presenting Prints. The book has a bit of a predjudice towards the 35mm SLR beginner, but even a beginner point & shoot person can learn a great deal. In short, it is a brief book that packs a punch! I highly recommend this for beginners.

This books covers some of the most fundamental issues of photography. It concentrates more on how to take good photographs instead of how aperture, shutter speed and depth of view work together. The tips for taking good photos at different settings are useful for beginners but there is a lack of some detailed information (such as prefered exposure setting, shutter speed, etc) provided. For example, you won't find the "focus at 1/3 distance rule for maximum DOF" for taking landscape photos. This book is very easy to understand for beginners. But if you want to learn a little bit more about how some of the most important elements of photography (such as aperture, shutter speed, DOF) work together, you should definately go look at another book "Kodak Pocket Guide to 35mm Photography" (112 pages) which contains much more information about photography than this book. And the size of that "pocket guide" is much smaller than this one so it indeed fits the pocket of your pants.

This book is small enough to fit in your pocket or camera bag. Yet, it's full of useful tips accompanied by demonstrative full color photographs. Personally, I find it to be a great reference. On vacations, I always bring it along as plane reading material so that my skills are refreshed for travel photography. It's a must have for any amateur photographer.

I recently bought a Canon Rebel 2000 and need a small simple book with guidelines on taking better pictures in a variety of different situations. This book is WONDERFUL!!! Gives many "real life" examples and shows sample pictures of everything the author talks about. A must for anyone wanting to take better pictures.

I'm a novice photographer and was looking for something more indepth. The book has a lot of great tips, but I was wanting more basic information about how to use apertures, shutter speeds, etc... and in a portable/pocket style. I think this will be a good resource once I become more experienced in photography.

Good Reference...,
This review is from: 101 Essential Tips on Photography (101 Essential Tips) (Paperback)
but in some themes leaves you a bit desoriented. This book is not realy intended for beginers, but is good enough as a camera-case reference guide. The ilustrations are nice, but I expected more brilliant works, and a some more pages dedicated to B/W pictures, not only mentioning it as a kind of film in the chapters dedicated to basic equipment and materials.Anyway, it can be very helpful to find some hints about color composition.

This little book is GREAT! It was one of many books that I bought when I took my first my first round with an SLR. I really got more out of it than several of the more impressive (& expensive) books that I bought! I carried it around in my camera bag forever and referred to it many times. Then when my daughter showed an interest in photography it is the one I picked to get her started. If you are just starting out.. don't sweat the 5 bucks!

Smart Little Book,

I bought this item together with other photography books and I am very pleased with it. The author, Michael Langford, (yes the same guy who wrote the highly acclaimed Basic Photography) distilled the lessons into 101 easy tips that is a great help for beginners who wanted to get their feet wet immediately.
I would highly recommend this book to any newcomer to photography who is both excited about his camera and cannot be bothered to spend time with more voluminous photography books. This book goes immediately to the heart of the matter: camera background and how to tackle photography subjects. If I had this book when I was still using my point and shoot, I would have produced more good pictures simply by the fact that I would be able to avoid the common pitfalls and mistakes of beginners (unknown to me then), which this little book teaches. Altough this is concerned with film photography, I still recommend this even if you have a digital camera because the proven ways of effectively composing a picture are still the same whether you use film or digital. Photography is still about the unique way of seeing things in a whole new light and composing them in the canvas that is your camera's viewfinder so that you would be able to show your audience exactly what you want.

My 15 year old son, who of course is an expert on everything, reluctantly read this compact book and admitted that he learned quite a bit from it. He certainly takes good pictures so we certainly got our moneys worth!
