Book Description

August 15, 2005
In this follow-up to 365 Prescriptions for the Soul, Dr. Bernie Siegel uses his trademark humor and insight to guide readers toward self-healing and an inspired life. He presents himself as a workout coach, providing a coach’s wisdom and stressing the coach’s mantra of practice, practice, practice. Each chapter consists of a coaching tip (where he explains the chapter’s teaching) followed by four or five exercises designed to bring the teaching directly into the reader’s life. The exercises are all short and easy to apply. Each of the 20 chapters covers a different topic, such as overcoming obstacles, creating a positive mental attitude, building a stronger spiritual foundation, and cultivating a sense of empowerment. Throughout the book, as always, Dr. Siegel emphasizes a proactive approach to self-healing. An ideal gift for friends and loved ones, 101 Exercises for the Soul shows how anyone can infuse their life with love and well-being.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

There's simple, and then there's simplistic. Bestselling author Siegel (Love, Medicine and Miracles), a retired doctor who pioneered alternative cancer therapies in the 1970s, offers a wellness manual for mind, body and spirit. This book combines 20 short "coaching tips," suggesting the vocabulary of life coaching, providing principles ("do what you fear," "flex your creative muscles") that are learned through workout-type "exercises" that don't require a whole lot of work: pet a furry animal, take a relaxing bath. What's not to like about a doctor who prescribes chocolate as a body-and-soul refresher? (Though he does say not to overdo it.) The concept is clear; unfortunately, a self-help formula is showing through. Siegel's years of experience with undoubtedly extraordinary people and stories don't come through in these bromides. He offers a laundry list of undeniably good things to do, but many readers may already be spending time in nature, gardening or volunteering in their community, as he suggests. There's nothing fresh. Siegel fans may welcome the return of the good doctor's humorous, reassuring, distinctive voice. Those who don't know him should start elsewhere in his helpful body of work. This book provides a really low-impact workout for self-help beginners. (Sept.)

5.0 out of 5 stars soul exercises is tops, March 2, 2006

101 Exercises for the Soul: "A Divine Workout Plan for Body, Mind, and Spirit" By Dr. Bernie Siegel
is another excellent book by this award-winning, best-selling author. Siegel reminds us that exercising our soul is as important as exercising our bodies, yet most of us forget or don't know how to do this. It does not require meditating on top of a mountain, or going on a silent retreat, or even attending church, but it does require attention and regular mindfulness. And exercising your soul yields tremendous rewards of living and loving with enthusiasm and joy. In simple exercises Dr. Siegel suggest things you may never have thought to be nurturing your soul and increasing your deep happiness. Such things as keeping your baby picture nearby to admire and appreciate, adopting a pet and playing with it every day, keeping a dream journal, creating a personal altar in your home, facing the fear that has always hindered you and experiencing and embracing it (even doing a daring sport), taking fun or beautiful photographs, or breaking out of your daily rut and doing something fun and unusual. These are some of the simple but joyful things Siegel suggests and then tells how you are nurturing your soul and exercising it in doing these. This is a little book which can be opened to any page and savored, trying the things that appeal to you and leaving the others for someone else. We highly recommend keeping this book by your bed and savoring it like chocolate for your soul by trying one exercise each day.
