5.0 out of 5 stars a favorite from waaaay back!
Wow. I have an edition of this on my bookshelf that once belonged to my grandmother, who died in 1927, when my father was only four. I used to love reading and memorizing these poems... Out to Old Aunt Mary's and Little Boy Blue made me cry every time. I'd gather all the neighborhood children in the back of my Dad's truck camper in the 1960s and read, with great, dark...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good addition but
This is a good addition to any poetry lovers collect. I love the choice of poems also and the production value is very good. But I'd also add the CD: "Poetry Classics To Funky Hits" to complement this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars a favorite from waaaay back!, July 2, 2006
This review is from: 101 Famous Poems (Hardcover)
Wow. I have an edition of this on my bookshelf that once belonged to my grandmother, who died in 1927, when my father was only four. I used to love reading and memorizing these poems... Out to Old Aunt Mary's and Little Boy Blue made me cry every time. I'd gather all the neighborhood children in the back of my Dad's truck camper in the 1960s and read, with great, dark drama, "I... have a renn-dezz-vooz with DEATH!" I'm sure all my old pals have strong feelings about poetry to this day!

Now I have learned how properly to pronounce "rendezvous," but I've lost my audience, so now I read the book to myself just for the enjoyment of those wonderful thoughts so beautifully crafted.

My dad had a poem to recite for any occasion. I'm sure that when he was a child, he, too, found his mother's book and began memorizing.

I suggest you buy a copy to put on your shelf where your own 8 year olds can find it. You might just hear them reading it to their own friends in great dramatic fashion. Great poetry is timeless.

5.0 out of 5 stars 101 best things to read to your child(ren), December 16, 2003
This review is from: 101 Famous Poems (Hardcover)
Some of my fondest childhood memories were created when my father read various poems from this book to me instead of Grimm's fairy tales. the experiences have instilled a tremendous love of the arts and poetry because of this experience. Poems such as, 'the Duel', 'Little Boy Blue', 'Trees', 'the Children's Hour' tell such great and fun stories that every library, young and old, should have this. It's also been a favorite gift for years.

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best collections of poetry ever!, March 14, 2007
This review is from: 101 Famous Poems (Hardcover)
101 Famous Poems is a book that I come to time and time again to read aloud and memorize great poetry. I was never very interested in poetry until one of my siblings made the comment, "Poe's 'The Raven' still creeps me out." and then, I just HAD to read 'The Raven'. And guess what? now I can hardly keep my nose out of this book! The collection of famous speeches and poems in 101 Famous Poems is unlike any other that I have ever found. Every person should have their own copy of this book. And if you don't, you're missin' out bud!

5.0 out of 5 stars Loving poetry started here., October 5, 2009
This review is from: 101 Famous Poems (Hardcover)
My Dad was old-fashioned. He quoted poetry a lot. In the car,
by the campfire, at almost any excuse. He gave me this book for
my 12th birthday. It is full of favorites, many of which I
memorized.
I have written poetry and song lyrics. I value poetry, and
some of the richest connections I have to my Dad are through
poetry.
If you're a parent...why not give this book to your kids?
"By the shores of Gitchee Goomie" (spelling is wrong I'm sure)
"I think that I shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree"
"Just before Christmas I'm as Good as I can Be"
"Four Score and Seven Years Ago"
"Quoth the Raven, Nevermore"
"O Captain, My Captain"
"Out to Old Aunt Mary's"
"The Gingham Dog and the Calico Cat"
"I wandered lonely as a cloud"
They are timeless classics. If you don't feed your kids
mind with good stuff, it will all be television pap.
The choice is yours. Be like my Dad and set a good example.
I don't have any kids, but I've given this to my neice.
She graduated in the top of her class last year.

I have owned this little book of poetry since I was a freshman in high school more than 40 years ago. I purchased this copy as a gift for my cousin who is also a lover of poetry. She told me she read it through when it arrived in the mail and liked it as much as I do. My favorites are The Fool's Prayer by Edward R. Sill, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere by Longfellow, I Have a Rendevous with Death by Alan Seeger, The Minuet by Mary Mapes Dodge, The Spires of Oxford by Winifred Letts and The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. I have read and re-read these and many others and can recite some by memory. A delightful little book of classic poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Poetry Collection, July 24, 2010

This is a fantastic volume of classic poetry. I grew up reading my mother's copy of this book which had been given to her as a gift. My mother and I would read these poems aloud to each other which inspired in me a lifelong love of poetry. I still own my mother's copy of this book, which is tattered and worn from frequent reading. I purchased another copy for myself and keep my mother's precious copy as a much loved momento. I highly recommend this book to anyone even remotely interested in poetry. It is a treasure.

A wonderful book for self or gift. It holds an amazing collection of poems as well as historical documents. Interesting to peruse. Many of these we studied in school - in the "old days". A must for our young people! Many famous quotes are found within these works. Check out the index!

I give this book for high school graduation gifts because I received one from a dear great aunt and uncle in 1073. This book has always been one of my treasured favorites. Good writing never goes out of style. This book contains some of the best poetry ever written.
