5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Designs
101 Granny SquaresThese are beautiful designs which require some skill. I've read reviews criticizing the connection of the squares. They don't have to be along the entire side. Use your imagination; be creative. It would have been nice, though, if the authors had included ideas for combining the squares.

I have loads of crochet stitch books including a few just on granny squares. Darla Sims is important in the crochet field so I ordered this sight unseen. The squares were all done in worsted wt yarn with size H hook. Finished size, gauge on the first two rows, pattern notes, special stitches and instructions written out are given for each square. A good color photo heads up each square. The sizes vary and some are in only one color while others have two or three. One problem with this book is the sentence on the front cover which says "mix and match these fabulous granny squares to create your own beautiful designs." If you do that, you need to find the same size squares unless you don't care and plan to just sew them together any old way. More serious is the poorly written instructions. Of the first 6 squares, only 4 worked out. I completed the first but it was written very badly. The fifth just couldn't be done. I found one very similar to it in the Jean Leinhauser "101 crochet squares" and successfully made it. I then returned to this book and again failed. I can only recommend this to very skilled crocheters who are looking for more grannies and who enjoy a good puzzle.

This book has great quality pictures of the squares. Several of the squares patterns I already have from other sources. My only complaint is, like so many others, think that by adding a row to a square, makes it a new pattern.

5.0 out of 5 stars Granny Squares made easy, September 10, 2011
This review is from: 101 Granny Squares (Paperback)
I bought this book last year as I love to crochet and having read some of the other reviews decided to write my own. I have to say I bought this in the UK and from the comments of everyone else I think ours may be a different version.

I have made every square in the book several times and did not find any difficult, although I admit you need to have a grasp of crocheting to do this. If in the UK just remember that the instructions need to go up 1 to make it work.

If you like a challenge then this is one of the books for you and if you like to make up your own designs as I do then this along with a similar book on the market will give you endless insperation.

On a scale of 1-10 I would without hesitation give it a 10. My copy is almost worn out and I have dropped hints for a replacement for birthday that is how much I love it

1.0 out of 5 stars Needs So Much Editing!, August 5, 2011
This review is from: 101 Granny Squares (Paperback)
The presentation of the squares in this book are nice. The pictures are good enough you can usually figure out what a stich might be when the pattern is wrong, if you are an experienced crocheter. It is nice to have the finished size of each square as well. However, that is where the positive notes end, I decided this summer I would work my way through this book and make each of the squares in it. This has turned into a colossal headache! Out of the 70 squares I have completed only 45 have worked out well, but almost every one of the patterns has at least one typo in it. So if you are a beginner just following the patterns as written will not work out. Many needed imho some major adjustments to work. Also I have come across one that is completely wrong, the pattern does not even produce the square pictured. There are also a few squares that are just repeats with different color patterns or one stitch changes. Over all this has been a very disappointing book and and a waste of 15 dollars.
