Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Oscar Wilde once wrote that "experience is simply the name we give our mistakes." By extension, experts (such as the contributors to this data management book) are simply people who openly share their mistakes--and the lessons learned from them--with you, hoping to help you learn the lessons and avoid making the same mistakes yourself.

Lessons learned from past mistakes are like lightbulb moments illuminating the present and providing guideposts toward the future. Knowing these common data management mistakes is no guarantee that you couldn't still find yourself lost in the dark. However, the knowledge could help you realize when you have strayed from the right road--and light a path to find your way back. -Jim Harris

In my first Data Roundtable post I discuss my journey of becoming "data aware." As I look back on the journey, I wish I could have read these lightbulb moments before starting - they would've helped me along the way. Each story has a message that implores the reader to practice "mature data management." I hope 101 Lightbulb Moments helps you in your journey to becoming data aware. - Rich Murnane

I wish someone would have made all the mistakes in 101 Lightbulb Moments before I did! As a seasoned "mistake and risk-taker," I hope you use my mistakes to make your data world better. - Joyce Norris-Montanari

Best ideas from the Data Roundtable? What's not to like? - David Loshin

Data Management at most large enterprises today is a difficult challenge. Complex infrastructure legacies, evolving business models and ever-changing technologies combined with complex, evolving and ever-changing people means that failure, rather than success, is too often the outcome. But why make the mistakes yourself when one can learn from others. This book provides these insights. And thus also provides a good service to the greater IT community.
