1.0 out of 5 stars Really!? Who Is Really Screwing Who?, October 15, 2009
This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
Lets recap what has been alleged in the Media regarding Huberman's journalist practices or lack there of.
Huberman writes a blog. In order to get people to read it he "creates" quotes, that are now discredited. Then Huberman gets enough of a following that he finds publisher(s) that are willing to pay him for more of the same. When writing the book(s) he pulls out some of his own "created" quotes, in order to get somebody to buy the books. When questioned about the quotes, he sources the quotes to his own blog. Then to compound the problem he puts the same created quotes on Wiki-quotes. All in, what some say, is some sort of grand self perpetuating hit job.

Then the media, without fact checking the "created" quotes, in pursuit of, what will be described, as an electronic lynching uses Huberman's discredited and disputed quotes to do a hatchet job. The media then parade out the same tired racial spokesmen to repeat the quotes, so they might make another Tawana Brawley type fiasco. If you really want a laugh, go to NY Times and read the recount of the sealed Sharpton deposition on why he had no money to pay the libel judgment that was ordered due to his actions in Tawana Brawley case, that was only paid off when he decided to run for President. In that case he clearly did not mind repeating false statements, even after they were proven to be false. So, allegedly, proven liars, quote Huberman's "created quotes", to build some sort of pyramid media Ponzi scheme.

In pursuit of ratings, money, and their own agenda, the media demonstrates how low they can go. No matter your political persuasion, you have to know this to be wrong. Huberman is the head of this snake, and to spend a nickel on what all the overwhelming majority of the reviewers herein rate poorly, would be to support this new media abuse.

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty Much the Same as Goldberg's Book, July 26, 2006
This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
Books like this are pretty much for entertainment value. Like its "conservative" counterpart, this book lists all the main culprits of the modern world, who are allegedly "screwing up" America.

The idea behind the book, of course, is laughable; in a free society, the only people capable of "screwing up America" are the American public.

You may be shocked at some of the people on Jack Huberman's list, as well as the rationale for including some of them. For example, he includes J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books. Her big crime? Selling an incredibly large number of books.

Herein lies a classic problem with this book and Goldberg's more conservative book. If the Harry Potter franchise is screwing up America (I don't think that it is), then the public should be blamed for buying in to the hype. Why blame the writer simply for writing it?

Such logic will have you laughing at Huberman, rather than laughing with him. Noentheless, it's entertaining.

3.0 out of 5 stars Depressing, January 29, 2007
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
Let me start off by saying that I am not a Republican and my attitudes towards politics and the world could best be described by the word Realism.

I was looking for a FSM car ornament when I saw this book. I bought it along with the ornament and the Gospel of the FSM. I was really looking for some political humor akin to Al Franken's books, which are quite entertaining as and enlightening. I have been sadly disappointed. This book drips with the same vitriol and sanctimonious, superior attitude that every right wing blow-hard knows by rote. The only difference is a substitution of names. Also, it's not funny, it's really just depressing. In my opinion the book just highlights how low we have sunk as a society that so many of the people in the book are current movers and shakers. Further depression can be realized by looking at both the Democratic (I.E. The Other Evil) party and the current crop of presidential contenders from either side.

The only good note about this is that many of the people in the book have already gotten what they had coming to them. A key example would be Dr. Laura who has faded into near non-existence since here nude photo shoot became public.

The book is quite a good catalog of hypocrisy, deceit, corruption and moral bankruptcy so if that's what you're looking for be my guest. But, if you are looking for a laugh forget it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Should've looked closer before buying, April 13, 2010
This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
At first glance I thought that the author was giving a list of people making America a worse place and possibly statistics to prove it. Well, a few chapters in and honestly, I thought he would play liberal, but give credit to conservatives where credit was due. No such case here. It is a ruthless attack on the Bush administration and anyone rich and voting republican. He promotes the lead singer of the Dixie Chicks purely on the basis of the quote about being ashamed Bush was from Texas. Shallow reasoning.
As a college student I have been lectured to attempt to avoid bias on a personal basis if I am to be credible on a large scale. Well, I see this book only being mildly entertaining from its flaws, and not entirely credible or worthy of a place on the front of the bookshelf. There is a lot of preaching examples here, and for a steeled mind the words will just come off as one-sided commentary.

1.0 out of 5 stars A book written by a very small man, March 14, 2008
This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
A very angry book, but not written well enough to be any good. I knew it was not going to be that good when on the back he has a quote " The Scum at Fox news"

He also quotes blogs, and most of the time he doesn't say who wrote the blog. That is just week. It is one of these things where you read it and say " I get it you do not like people who do not think just like you, well sorry."

He is just like the people who he hates, a small minded wimp. He is the Ann Coulter of the other side, they are both angry hacks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smarter and more entertaining than I'd imagined, August 13, 2006
By
This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
Why include J. K. Rowling, who's sold an ungodly number of books? Read that part and find out (the terms "excess" and "bricoleur" come to mind). Why include NASCAR, an institution as American as apple pie and watered-down beer? As with Rowling/Harry Potter, it's merely a denigration of the excesses of pop culture. What about good ol' Dr. Phil? Huberman's condemnation of America's most popular and trusted TV shrink (who's not actually a medical doctor, but a PhD in psychology) is one of the most aptly written sections and shouldn't be missed.

Though this book is intended to be critical of a great number of people, it's still a humor title and can't always be taken too seriously--so keep that in mind while reading and maybe you won't get too heated when he bashes something near-and-dear. Yes, many will be offended by the material, mostly because it flies in the face of the status quo (and some people need to be offended). Even if you heartily disagree with Huberman's assertions he at least makes you think (hopefully) and question what's going on around you, in terms of the government, pop culture, the business world, and so on. (Being critical of one's institutions is the essence of democracy, after all.)

Huberman deftly weaves serious denunciations with many bits of hilarity, and backs up his assertions with a reasonable depth and variety of sources. He's not the comedic maestro Al Franken is but he's got his own voice and keeps the reader entertained.

This book is a necessary response to Goldberg's whiny and pitiful "100 People Who Are Screwing Up America". I've read much of Goldberg's "100 People..." and it's just not funny. I can handle liberal-bashing, as long as it's genuinely funny; but Goldberg's writing just isn't humorous, nor is it insightful. Where Goldberg merely stokes the fire of far-right loathing, Huberman consistently makes good cases for persons and organizations that really are detrimental to a healthy America (and world).

Not quite deserving of a full 5 stars, but ½-star increments aren't allowed here.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for the thinking., May 19, 2007

This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
I got this at the library, thank god, so I didn't waste the 60 cents that this book is now being sold for. If all you want to do is smoke pot and then read this poorly written book, fine as that is all it is good for but if you are used to reading higher quality books, are educated, read and think critically; you will be grossly disappointed. After page 18, I realized that I was about to embark on a repeatitive attack on America by a fool that has to remind us that he is from Canada but doesn't go into why he stays in this rotten nation. I paged throughout the book and saw that I was correct -a long winded chant that gets boring after 20 pages. It is written at a high school level to trap as many people as possible into reading this. Note to those who actually thought this was good: get out more. There are a lot of great books out there. If all you do is sit and read recycled Chomskyist propaganda, then I can see why you would like this vomit.

I agree with almost all of the choices. This stands far, far above the piece of propaganda that inspired it. As for the choices I don't agree with, I appreciate the author's arguments. But don't read a single page if you are one of the species of thoughtless animals commonly known as "conservatives."

5.0 out of 5 stars Required reading for understanding the fall of the American Empire, June 13, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 101 People Who Are Really Screwing America (Paperback)
Today, the USA, more than ever, is being driven to destruction by ruthless politicians and corporations, bent on preserving their position through thoughtless greed-driven campaigns, all for short-term gain and power without responsibility.

Of course, the USA has been dumbed down by these interests for so long now that the average American is unable to interpret what is really happening to their world.

This book truely addresses the culprits in this dark (or last) phase of the great American society. You're either a director of this ugly process or you are a supporter. Here is a good list of 101 people who are either or both.

Goldberg's book by contrast is a shallow contribution to the power grabber agenda, which is really a class struggle. He attacks anyone who has ever defended our rights. To bad Joe Average American can only think in simple terms and is easily manipulated by the Right-wing media.

Keep your eyes out for more destruction in the coming years, especially if the GOP and Bush Co. persist in their campaigns.
Too bad Ann Coulter is right about one thing: liberals and Democrats have been largely useless as of late in response to the hateful agenda of the other side.
