5.0 out of 5 stars Fun for the whole family, January 18, 2007
Don't know what to do on the weekend or short vacations with your kids? Here are some great and some simple ideas that your children will delight in. It was fun going through the book with my 10 year old grand daughter and identifying what she had done (quite a few of the things) and what things she wanted to do in the next 14 months before she turned 12. There is a check off list which is usually appealing to a preteen. Also it was fun to recollect the many things the family had done together. We had been to a pig pen and a working farm, dug for fossils, spent hours in a cemetary, the state capitol, an aquarium, a waterfall, backstage and so on. Among things to do: a jail, courthouse, working port, antiquarian book store and a few more things. I will give it to my other grandchildren on their birthdays. Great Gift, great fun, great learning experieinces, and great price.

5.0 out of 5 stars a great graduation gift, May 12, 2007
Books that encourage one to aspire to see all the world great sites are inspiring, but it not realistic for everyone to see the Taj Mahal and Patagonia.

This book brings adventure closer to home, and is wonderfully flexible and practical. Everyone can and should see a Migration Path, a Fort, a Working Farm, a Street Market and the House Where Their Parents Grew Up.

Besides, who doesn't want to recapture those elementary years?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!, March 19, 2007
I bought this for my 12yr old, and we've had so much fun looking through it over and over, for all the fun places to go. You really dont have to travel far to do most of them. There are terrific photos, and I love the reference in the back with web addresses and info. on places to go. I plan to purchase several more as gifts for nieces/nephews!

5.0 out of 5 stars A PERFECT BOOK!, February 21, 2009

Not sure why there is an age of "12" other than it makes it a catchy title. But I stumbled upon this book looking for another book online. Wasn't sure if it would be worth purchasing. So I had the local library order it in for us to check out.

Well let me tell you...my son who is 11 yrs. old couldn't put it down, as well my youngest who is 8 yrs. old...we've done some of the things mentioned in the book. Which brought back memorys and great laughs of past things we've done together...And also has given us direction for scheduleing vacations in the future. Some of the things in there I wasn't even aware you could do! So much fun we're purchasing our own book so we can use the stickers to add to the pages as to which ones we've been to and such.

Definately worth the asking price. I love the place in front of the book that stores the stickers listing "Top 20", NO WAY!, Yawn Fest,This Rocks< Awesome adventure,Been there, way strange and "WISH LIST".

If your considering the book...DO SO! There are so many places to see that you wouldn't have "thought" of on your own I'm sure...it's cool to discuss things that we've not done and what we would like to do first. And again all the conversations we've had when we see stuff we've done already. It's like...CHECK IT OUT WE'VE DONE THAT ONE! Then we laugh and talk about the time we had doing that particular vacation or outing...

5.0 out of 5 stars We LOVED this book, July 31, 2008

I bought this book so my 10 year old son and I could look through it for ideas on places to visit. It comes with stickers that you place on the pages - for example "Been There," "No Way," "Top 20," and "Awesome Adventure." We had such a fun time going through the book and remembering things we've done and talking about things we would like to do, for example visit a "Big Cave." The ideas are broad so you can find them in almost any area of the country, like "A Working Farm" or "The Home Your Parents Grew Up In" or a "Marvel of Engineering." I left a pretty poor review of "500 Places to Take Your Kids Before They Grow Up," but this is exactly the type of book I was hoping to find. There are pages in the back for notes on your travels, and we plan to go back and write in where we visited. Very well done book, BRAVO!!

5.0 out of 5 stars awesome and fun ideas, August 13, 2008

My seven-year-old and I are both pleased with the ideas of things to do in this book. O'Sullivan has selected 101 outstanding ideas of places to go to enrich a child's (or adult's) life. From visiting a lighthouse, to checking out a forest canopy to eating at a quirky restaurant (such as South Carolina's South of the Border restaurant), they are all easy-to-do and worth doing, and they create experiences your child won't forget. The stickers are great fun--my son has already posted what he has accomplished already and is ready-to-go on the next adventure. A++++ book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun book that spurs conversation, September 20, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I was skeptical of this book after reading other reviews, but decided to give it a shot. My son received this as a gift for his ninth birthday, and loves it. It is not preachy, judgemental, or unrealistic (okay, visiting a distant island is perhaps a bit extravagant). The absolute best thing about the book is that it spurred conversation in our family. The majority of the suggestions are close to home things that can be done. We already have a couple of new ideas for fun day trips. Even though I didn't think I would want to, I recommend this book. The full color pages and ample stickers are a plus.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift item!, November 8, 2007

This is a great book for a person of any age provided that they are interested in getting off the couch. This is the second time I have purchased this book but probably not the last. This purchase is for a Christmas gift for a nephew. The last purchase was for a birthday gift for a different nephew. I'm not sure if the recipients love it as much as I do. I wish someone had given me a book like this when I was younger. Two big thumbs up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Incentive to Get Kids Interested in "Boring" Trips, August 25, 2011
Not all of the destinations we have ventured to in our daughter's eight short years are of much interest to kids. For the most part she is pretty patient and well-behaved, but I must admit that bribery is often resorted to. This book has been a huge help piquing her interest in heading to what would typically sound rather boring to a child (and even to some adults).

Now, before you freak out about how unfair it would be to entice a child into wanting to take a bunch of expensive and unrealistic treks around the globe...read on.

Most of the places listed are very general and can probably be found in your "backyard". A couple examples are "A Farmer's Market" and "A Cemetery". You can decide whether you visit a farmer's market in Paris and the Jewish cemetery in Prague, or the ones at home. Granted, depending on where you live a few may require more travel, like "A Lighthouse". But again, you still have the choice to consider a trip to the Outerbanks of North Carolina or to Gdansk, Poland.

Our daughter is very methodical so checking destination off a list is incentive enough for her to pay attention to a boring tour guide tell her about the history of some old rocks on a hill in Rome. Does that count as an "Archeological Site" or an "Ancient City"?

Purchased this for my son when he was 8. We have had a lot of fun looking at the new ideas for places to go and keeping track of places we have been There is a section in the back to write notes about your experiences. This book doesn't tell you specific places you have to go, but rather gives you ideas like "going to a farmer's market" or "the largest" of something. If your child likes to try new things and places they will love this book. My son turns ten this year and we are well on our way to seeing all 101 places. I suspect we will keep this book long after my son has grown up, it will remind us of lots of adventures.
