Book Description

October 21, 2003

This is an anthology designed to help you get through the stresses of modern life. For rapid and effective relief around the clock, 24-7, without side effects, try a poem -- whatever the time of the day (or night), you can be sure that some poet, past or present, has been there too.

To help you find the right poem at the right time, the organization of the book is like that of a book of hours. Starting with Getting Up, it then moves on to those other morning traumas: Stepping on the Scale and Looking into the Mirror.

As the day moves on there are sections to cover everything, from Office Politics to Off to School. And if by five p.m. your head is throbbing, dig into the poems in the Take 5 section and let the world recede. By the end of the day you may want to look for inspiration among the poems in Going Home, but if you are intent on veering from the straight and narrow, then turn to the Behaving Badly poems and you'll find you're in good company. Anyone who feels vaguely guilty about settling down in front of the TV instead of taking cafÉ society by storm should turn to the poems in the Not Tonight section.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Amazon.co.uk readers' reviews for '101 Poems To Save Your Life': 'I really enjoyed this book: beats all those "Feng Shui Your Cat" type anthologies and is definitely one I'd pass on to my friends because of its wit (and relevance) on the subjects of birth, marriage, death, and everything in between!I particularly liked one about "Going to Bed with a Cheese and Pickle Sandwich" -- who needs a man when you've got instant gratification waiting in the fridge?' 'With "101 Poems" now by my bedside table, I feel that I can conquer any problem that may arise in my life!! It is a "must have" for any person that needs that tiny bit of help to get past a difficult moment in a humourous and sensitive way, without having to leave the house.' --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Try a poem any time ; a stress relief without side effects !, June 26, 2004
This review is from: 101 Poems to Get You Through the Day (and Night) (Hardcover)
A good introduction:
Diane Sawyer, a trusted and adorable person, uses innovative terminology to prescribe the antidotes she may tried to invite you "to Daisy Goodwin who collected all these tough, funny, angry, consoling antidotes to the demons of the average day."
Daisy Goodwin who proved her talent as a BBC television producer of top-rated television programs is sensitive and creative as a poetry anthology editor. Daisy who attended Cambridge, and Columbia University through a Harkness Scholarship, pursued similar across the Atlantic cultural diversity as Thomas Merton.

A poetry of hours:
"To help you find the right poem at the right time, the organization of the book is like that of a book of hours!" Amazingly true, a Horologion is organized to find the right psalm for the right hour, psalms are Hebrew poetic verses.
Another of the 101 Poems, has a simile to 'One thousand and one Nights' that saved Scheherazade's life, may suggest that if you read it accompanied by Korsakoff's Scheherazade you have a nice effective relief around the clock. Her earlier selection; '101 Poems That Could Save Your Life: An Anthology of Emotional First Aid' was introduced by NPR's Scott Simon, and Anne McKevitt, author of 'Style on a Shoestring' thanks Daisy Goodwin for; "giving me new horizons"

A Sampler of beauty:
From 'Getting out of Bed' to end of year Christmas Poem, you got guide posts for the day; Drivetime, Just say no, Call waiting, Toothache, Take 5, Going Home, One for the road, Not tonight, If you would like, try some of the shorter ones with me:

Friends like these:
Who, gratis, shared my social glass,
but when misfortune came to pass,
Referr'd me to the pump? Alas! My friend.

Two Curses for Love:
1 Don't see him. Don't phone or write a letter.
2 The easy way; get to know him better.

Cake:
i wanted one life
you wanted another
we couldn't have our cake
so we ate each other.
