Book Description

Motorbooks Workshop June 15, 2001
This all-color collection guides owners of pre-1990 Porsche 911s through 101 carefully selected, weekend projects illustrated with step-by-step, full-color studio photography. Divided into three categories-performance, handling, and customization-the projects range from 30-minute maintenance projects to eight-hour performance modifications; each is accompanied by a handy chart indicating how much skill, cash, and time are needed to successfully complete the task. Author Wayne Dempsey also explains why the jobs should be undertaken and what kind of improved performance the owner can expect. An unprecedented book, and a great resource for everyone from casual enthusiasts to shop pros.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent, all inclusive book, November 5, 2001
By
Chris (monroe, ct United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 1965-1989 (Paperback)
It's not a service manual (those are boring) and it's not just a coffee table book with no susbstance (who needs more of those). For those of you with 911's of any year, especially '65-'89 this book is an invaluable addition to your library.
I enjoy the book because it's a very handy project book. I appreciate the personal tips that the author adds to the text for each project. For me, service manuals are sometimes frustrating because they give you the procedure but none of the experience comes through. This author has defintely performed all of the projects himself and all of the information there is valuable. The articles are concise and to the point. I especially appreciate the suggested secondary repairs/upgrades that should be performed while accomplishing any of the 101 projects listed.
One of the biggest benefits of this book is that it is written for the home mechanic. I know that I do not have the same facilities as the dealership in town. This author may have the facilities but you wouldn't know that by reading the book...and that's a good thing. He has many shortcuts and tips that help the home mechanic. The pros may use a specific tool and if the author knows you can get around that (because often they are not available) then he tells how. That alone has saved me. Also, you know (before you get halfway through a service manula) what will be involved and what difficulties you may run into. I know exactly how long it will take, what tools I need, how much it will cost, and what to expect.
So far, due to time constraints I have only been able to perform 7 of these tasks.....some of which I didn't even know I could do until I bought the book.
I highly recommend it and it's the perfect compliment to the other 911 books out there. I also own Bruce Anderson's book, a few of the 911 reference books, the Haynes manual, and the Bentley manual. This book is at the top of my pile right now.
Enjoy getting your hands dirty!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars An ideal garage companion for the 911 owner., January 1, 2004
This review is from: 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 1965-1989 (Paperback)
The only way this book could have been better is if Dempsey titled it "Porsche fur der dummkopf". If there is one common trait among Porsche-Nuts, it is that they are more likely to tinker with, modify, or maintain their cars themselves than fans of any other marque. This book makes the ideal companion for the numerous weekend projects that they will invarably undertake.

The projects listed in the book follow in logical procession. The first chapter is devoted to simple things such as changing oil, or safely jacking the car up (ask anyone who has ever accidentally mashed an oil line to explain this one). Subsequent chapters are broken down by car system. Engine, gearbox, electrical, etc... Each project has a rating system that describes project difficulty, required parts, average completion time, cost, and recommended tools. Each project also has a listing of complimentary projects that could be combined with the current one. Had to yank your engine to get at that leaking oil cooler thermostat seal? Might as well do your crankcase breather mount while you have it out and can reach it.

101 Projects also includes a recommended additional reading list so owners can delve deeper into subjects that could not be fully detailed due to space considerations. Even for the reader that intends to do only the simplest of chores on his or her car, this manual will help them to make educated choices about modification and repair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Porsche 911 Book Around..., January 28, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911 1965-1989 (Paperback)
Just when you thought the factory manuals were the last word, along comes 101 Projects for Your Porsche 911. This book is divided up into many sections (Engine, Electrical, Transmission), and offers full-color photos of all the projects as they are completed step-by-step. It would seem impossible to jam all this information into one book, but this 245 page book has it all! From an overview of rebuilding the 911 engine, to the repair of 1st gear on your transmission, this book has it all. Each project is introduced with a table that has time and effort, as well as tools and materials used to complete the job. If you own a 911, this book is more important than your owner's manual. It also covers all years 1965-89, but is semi-applicable to the later-model cars as well...
