This book has been a great resource for me at my nursery school. I teach music, and we started to use the intruments, and this has been a great help. Lots of fun suggestions.

This is a great little book with lots of fun and simple activities to do with really little ones. A lot of these activities are so simple that you will think "I could have come up with that" but now that I'm a new mom and back to work I'm happy I don't have to. I can just choose one or two of these to add to help make my lesson more fun.

I teach music classes at a preschool, and this book is perfect for my uses! The activities are fun, simple, and help teach children how to use various musical instruments properly and creatively. They also teach music fundamentals, such as rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. For someone teaching music to young children (mine are 2-5), this book is invaluable! I love it!

This book has some good ways to use rhythm instruments with familiar songs.

This book was not what I expected it to be. It is for someone who has no knowledge of music or rhythm. The ideas were so elementary that it was insulting to me. "Here's a cymbal, crash it 4 times," etc. Recommended only for those with no knowledge of percussion or rhythm.

This book is full of wonderful activities that are practical for the preschool classroom. I found the activities to be varied, engaging and age appropriate. I appreciated that there were activities for various types of instruments as well as rhythm band. I wish there was an edition that included an audio CD, but it is pretty easy to collect music from my classroom collection to go with the activities.

Disappointing, targeted at only very young children,

I recomend this book only for use with pre-school aged children. Definately nothing past Kindergarden. I was hoping for excercises for K to 3. Well written, just wish it was stated as appropriate only for very young ages.
Purchased as a gift for a K to 5 music teacher.

All shook up and feeling good!,

This virtuoso book of exercises will appeal to professionals working in a wide range of children's services.
Some of the exercises could be suitable for populations with special needs or in special circumstances, and the resource needs are modest and the materials readily available. The choice and gradation of exercises are impressive. The author, Abigail Flesch Connors, has inherited her late Father's wonderful ability to give a vivid description in a few simple words (compare it with Dr. Rudolf Flesch's 'Why Johnny Can't Read'). Reading the book, I could not help wondering whether, with bereaved, traumatised or abused children who found verbal communication impossible, selected exercises might help establish communication with a trusted adult. For all groups of children, in the course of enjoying the Rocking Rythms, development of social and attentional skills should be promoted by this book, and within appropriately supervised and structured games the exercises might even promote wider development of a child's executive functions.

I found the activities in this book a good resourse with some cute "piggy back" song activities. However, at the back of the book you have a Subject Index and Seasonal Index. They tell you the song/acivity, but fail to give you the page that it is on!!!! You must then flip back to the index at the end to find the page. Why not just put the page number on both?!

Good Resource for Non-Music Specialist,

This review is from: 101 Rhythm Instrument Activities: for Young Children (Paperback)
As the owner of a prechool music program I am always looking for new ideas to incorporate into my curriculum. This book gave me a jumping off place for several new ideas. However, I think the greatest beneficiaries of this book will be the non-music specialist preschool teacher and parents of preschoolers. As is common with many preschool curriculums, this book relies heavily upon familiar song tunes, which makes learning the music for each ativity very quick and easy. Each activity is succinctly described in easy to understand language and, with only one or two exceptions, limits materials needed to the instruments and occassionaly a CD player. If you want activites that teach fundamental music skills, this book does that in limited fashion (fast/slow, piano/forte, stady beat), but only experientially; Children are not introduced to any musical terminology and teachers are not cautioned that children often have a difficult time keeping a steady beat, thus some frustration may ensue with some of the rhythm stick activities.
