Anyone who loves dogs knows that they have their own unique personalities-they may be brave or timid, placid or hyper-but they're always soulful. In this collection of 101 arresting four-color portraits, Hale manages to capture the essential doggishness of her subjects, whether it's Hamish the Chihuahua's minuscule, quizzical face or the quiet intelligence of Loki, a Staffordshire bull terrier mix, sitting patiently with a kitten on his head. Though there are a few gratuitous props-a knitted cap on a Gordon setter, a pearl necklace on a Chinese Crested-the photographs don't descend into the realm of the kitschy and too-cute, partly because the dogs' expressive faces are the focus of the compositions. Hale tosses a few relevant quotes into the mix as well, e.g., Walt Whitman's "The dog is the god of frolic," and P.G. Wodehouse's "It is fatal to let any dog know that he is funny, for he immediately loses his head and starts hamming it up." The appendix, which gives a brief description of each dog's story, adds dimension to the photographs. We learn, for example, that Jabba, an eight-year-old pit bull, is just as shy as she looks. During the shoot, Hale says, she "ran terrified from the room...frightened by a fly."

About the Author

Rachael Hale has won numerous awards for her animal portraiture. Since 1995 her images have been published on calendars, posters, greeting cards, and stationary in over 20 countries worldwide. She lives and works in Auckland, New Zealand, with her chocolate-brown Newfoundland named Henry.

This book is adorable! Any Dog lover would love the beautiful photography of Rachael Hale. She is wonderful! The photographs are so creative and she truly captures each different breed's personalities so well! I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves dogs!

I am a professional photographer and I am a confessed dog lover. Even if I wasn't a dog lover I have to admit this book is full of great imagery. As photography goes, the less is more rule applies and allows you to see the portraits for what they are: portraits of some great personalities.

If you or someone you know or love are a dog lover, then get this book!

I absolutely love this book. The photos are extraordinary and the book's setup is really nice. For the price, I was expecting a flimsy paperback but it's hardcover and heavy like a true photography book.
I especially love how, at the end of the book, there's some info about each of the dogs in the book. You can tell that the author really cared about the dogs and was really creative in getting her shots.
