Back in the 70s and 80s, many of us had parents or grandparents who would tune in to the local "Beautiful Music" FM station and listen all day to the Muzak-y strains of Frank Chacksfield, Andre Kostelanetz, and yes, the 101 Strings as they performed orchestral versions of the hits of yesteryear. Every so often they would attempt a "rock" song -- some Beatles tune or an Elton John ballad -- but they specialized in early-to mid-century pop songs and light classical tunes, as heard in this little sampler.

As a child, I hated having to listen to "fuddy-duddy music," but decades later, I can appreciate all those hours of forced listening for the amazing musical education they gave me. I know literally hundreds of songs that kids my age who only listened to top 40 stations never heard. And I do admit to a nostalgic attachment for the lush -- nay, overweeningly saccharine -- arrangements. They seemed artless to me at the time, but now I can hear that the good ones are brilliant in their own smarmy way.

Get this great little sampler for your granddad, or to relive your forcibly Muzak-filled car trips with dad. Or just get it because this kind of music dominated the airwaves once upon a time, and like the electric typewriter and corded telephone, it's gone forever, and sometimes it's nice to look back and glance fondly upon the innocent past.

I love this music, along with so much many more genres of the musical world, but it seems to me there is an error in this listing, as the "Swan Lake" (Waltz) actually sounds like "The Sleeping Beauty Waltz" by Tchaikovsky. Either way, it is the most relaxing to listen to.

Not sure that "Pop/General" is an appropriate label for this genre of music. I agree with many of the points mentioned in the first review...but listen to the samples before you download it. This music is an acquired taste :)

101 Strings Orchestra - "50th Anniversary Collection" Sampler (Amazon Exclusive) is a beautiful blend of an orchestra (mainly strings) playing classical pieces such as Claire De Lune, The March of the Nutcracker and the Blue Danube. It is 14 minutes of pure pleasure.

The music is what I had hoped it would be and is great for moods that will come to me. It is fun to check out different artists.
