This guide has substitutions for things I've never known could be done. It is very helpful in the kitchen. Also there are some suggestions for healthier choices. The book even gives the 'why' on some of the substitutions which I found immensely helpful too. I like understanding why as it makes me feel more confident in using said substitution.

I am in love with this book!!!! I am always having to figure out how I am going to make a good recipe if I don't have one of the ingredients listed. This book has seriously made a world of difference since I have been going through it and marking what I know I will probably need to use in the future.

THis book is a to-the-point reference showing simple food substitutions. I can't tell you how often I've wanted to make something and not had a particular ingredient on hand. Sure, you can google it but how much nicer to have a raedy-reference to hand. Thanks.

The author provides some good substitution alternatives. However I do have a few nits to pick.
She suggests that sour cream is loaded with fat and calories. Not if you use non fat sour cream.
It comes in at a miserly 10 cals per TBS. Yogurt is much higher in calories. I suggest that non
fat sour cream is a great replacement for mayonnaise which is a whopping 100 cals per TBS.

You can also make your own very low cal creamy salad dressing by diluting the non fat sour cream
with skim milk down to a creamy pourable consistency and then add onion powder and garlic powder
and finely chopped green onions which comes in at about 7 cals per TBS as opposed to 100 cals for
creamy salad dressings and does not have that diet taste.

3 examples: First, it is not true that lemon juice is a good sub for vinegar. Second not true that pasteurized milk gone sour cannot be used in recipes and must be thrown out. Third she has no understanding of gluten free at all and recommends that to avoid gluten substitute bean or coconut flour for PART of the regular flour. GF means no gluten ever period. I have celiac disease and statements like that drive me nuts.

You should have fewer trips to the grocery store after reading and using the 101 Substitutions For Ingredients by author Christina Jones. Jones has compiled a neat selection of substitutions you can use when you discover you may be out of a needed ingredient. The one caveat to ingredient substitutions, at least what I've found in my 40+ years of cooking, is the substitution may not be exactly the same but it will suffice. In other words, use ingredient substitutes when you really need to.

Some of the ideas Jones offers in her book:

Allspice: Ingredient substitutes you can use if you are out of allspice.

Baking Powder: Ingredient substitutes you can use if you are out of baking powder.

Butter substitutes: Ingredient substitutes you can use if you are out of butter.

Her book also covers healthier cooking methods, snack substitutions, frosting substitutes and many other ideas that help make the task of cooking easier.

There is an interactive table of contents making navigation is easy.

Christina Jones is an inventive and creative problem solver. She has in the past run a large daycare, so she certainly has experience cleaning up after many little kids, without harmful chemicals or spending a ton of cash. After many years of childcare service, she started up her own cleaning business and employs daily many of the tips included in these lovely little books. Her children also help coming up with practical solutions to different types of everyday problems. Her daughters are fashion queens and know how to dress on a budget, using both new and gently used clothing items in very creative ways. Her sons are big time gamers, so they always share tips on how to have fun on the internet for free.
