Book Description

June 16, 2004 Indiana Natural Science

So many trees, so little time. What's a nature lover to do? If you can't tell the difference between an Eastern hemlock and a scrub pine, or a cottonwood and a black willow, 101 Trees of Indiana is the field guide for you.

101 Trees of Indiana contains all you need to identify a tree in the Hoosier State, whatever the season. Not since Dr. Charles Deam's Trees of Indiana was published in 1953 has the subject been covered so thoroughly. Ecologist Marion T. Jackson has selected approximately 101 species of trees, mostly native to the state but also others that are widely naturalized or planted extensively. Jackson's comments about individual trees alone are worth the price of the book.

Illustrations by Katherine Harrington provide clear and accurate botanical details. Ron Rathfon's vivid color photographs make identification in the field a breeze. Further aiding in identification are text descriptions and species keys for both summer and winter conditions. Distribution maps indicate the counties in which each tree has been found and recorded. These maps have been updated to include more than 2,000 new county records discovered by scientists, foresters, and naturalists since the publication of Deam's work.

101 Trees of Indiana will fit handily into a pocket or backpack, and the information for each tree, including drawings and photographs, is on facing pages—no flipping back and forth from text to picture. Naturalists, hikers, landscapers, and students will thoroughly enjoy this lovely and authoritative book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Guide for Trees of Indiana, June 22, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Trees of Indiana: A Fieldguide (Indiana Natural Science) (Paperback)
Jackson's book is well written and set forth in a useable format. It has hundreds of color photographs. The book also has multiple illustrations for each tree. I am just a beginner when it comes to tree identification and even I could use the book with few problems. It is well worth the asking price.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 101 Trees of Indiana: A Fieldguide (Indiana Natural Science) (Paperback)
I bought this book to learn the species of the trees in our area of southern Indiana. It does this job well.

There are usually 4-6 excellent color photographs for each entry, showing bark, leaves, stems, seeds, flowers, fruit, and overall shape of the tree. (Not all items are shown for all trees.) The most useful part of the book, however, are the identification keys. Each key uses an either/or question to lead you onward towards ultimate identification.

Example:
19. Leaves compound: Go to question 20
Leaves simple: Go to question 33

The next question leads you to succeeding questions until you finally get to the name of a genus (such as Quercus for the various oaks). Looking up the genus in the index will send you to the page, or pages, for all trees in that genus. The two-page descriptions for each individual species should allow you to identify the tree.

Unless you remember your high school biology you will need to review the introduction, where you will get a refresher course on botany as it pertains to naming and identifying trees, but the time spent will be rewarded.

Although the habitat maps are limited to Indiana, this book can still be an excellent reference for those outside the state.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Field Guide, August 9, 2007
By
MJ (Southern Indiana) - See all my reviews
This review is from: 101 Trees of Indiana: A Fieldguide (Indiana Natural Science) (Paperback)
This field guide is clear, well written and easy to use. It includes a step by step process to help you identify the type of tree you have in your woods. The pictures are accurate, not some artistic rendition or sample of the PERFECT specimen. You'll enjoy using this guide.
