Book Description

8 and up4 and up
Thirteen-year-old Steve "Sneeze" Wyatt is proud to be known for his fabulous inventions, but unfortunately they are also the reason his parents want him to skip a grade and leave all of his friends behind! Well, there's no way that the resourceful Sneeze is going to let that happen. So, this time around he's come up with 101 sure-fire methods to drive his teachers absolutely batty . . . and not even a worrisome case of inventor's block or fear of a scary teacher nicknamed Fierce will deter him from his plan.

In the tradition of Louis Sachar's There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom, this humorous tale of a boy at his wits' end will keep young readers laughing from start to show-stopping finish.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8–Steve "Sneeze" Wyatt, inventor extraordinaire, and his friends from 101 Ways to Bug Your Parents (Dial, 1996) are back in another fast-paced and humorous adventure at Jefferson Middle School. Everyone is counting on Steve to come up with a project idea for the History Faire. What they don't realize, and he is unwilling to share, is that he has "inventor's block." When his parents reveal that they are arranging for him to skip eighth grade and move on to high school next year in order to encourage his inventing skills, he can't even admit the truth to them. How can he stop this plan from going forward and keep his secret? By causing trouble during class, of course. With the help of his friends and family, Steve eventually admits his problem and finds resolution. References are made to the first book, but this one can stand alone. In spite of the title, the characters show respect for their teachers and parents, and for one another. A delightful read.–Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SD

From Booklist

Gr. 5-7. In this stand-alone follow-up to 101 Ways to Bug Your Parents (1996), seventh-grade-inventor Steve "Sneeze" Wyatt has a lot going on. The invention convention is coming up; his history teacher, Ms. Pierce, seems bent on failing him; and his classmates are depending on him for a clever history-fair entry. Unfortunately, he has inventor's block. Not wanting to let people down, he devises a plan, which, of course, goes awry. Plot tangents (including his mother's pregnancy and a friend's hypochondria) may overwhelm readers, but Sneeze is an appealing, dimensional character whose first-person narrative is bound to entertain. The story is both comical and compassionate as it highlights the challenges of living up to expectations and the rewards of trying your best. Appended are Steve's amusing "101 Ways to Bug My Teachers" (most contributed by actual students) and instructions for a class project--mummifying a chicken. No kidding! Shelle Rosenfeld

More About the Author

101 Ways to Bug Children's Book Author Lee Wardlaw:

#1. Ask her how many children's books she writes a day

#2. Ask her when she'll grow up and write 'real' books (meaning books for grown-ups)

#3. Tell her you'd write children's books too - if you had time.

Lee Wardlaw makes time: She's the author of numerous books for young readers, including the award-winning novels 101 Ways to Bug Your Teacher and 101 Ways to Bug Your Parents.

But where does Lee get the ideas for so many books?

"From my own life," Lee says. "Corey's Fire is based on my family's experiences after our house and neighborhood were destroyed in a California wildfire. Dinosaur Pizza was inspired by my childhood love of bologna/mustard/potato-chip sandwiches. I wrote the folk tale picture book Punia and the King of Sharks because I admire Hawaii's rich history of hula storytelling. And my years of experience as a daughter, student, parent and classroom teacher gave me loads of creative material for my 'Bugging' series!"

Lee grew up in Santa Barbara, CA, where she attended Cold Spring Elementary, Santa Barbara Junior High and Santa Barbara High school. She graduated with honors from Cal Poly State University, San Luis Obispo, with a degree in education, and taught elementary school for five years before deciding to write full-time. Lee has 30+ years experience presenting lively and interactive writing programs in grades K through 8th. Since 1988, Lee has also taught a variety of workshops and classes for educators, librarians, parents and aspiring writers. For several years, she was the 'Ask the Children's Book Author' columnist for Inklings, an online magazine.

Lee's books have been honored by the American Library Association, the International Reading Association, Children's Book Council, National Council of the Social Studies, National Council of Teachers of English, Bank Street College of Education, the International School Librarians Association, and more. She has also won 7 state reader's choice awards. Lee is an active member of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, and belongs to the Author's Guild, California Reading Association, Children's Literature Council of Southern California and, yes, even the Cat Writers' Association. Upcoming releases include: Won Ton: A Cat Tale Told in Haiku (Holt, 2010), 101 Ways to Bug Your Friends & Enemies (Dial, 2011) and Red, White & Boom! (Holt, 2011).

Lee is currently enrolled in Loyola College of Maryland and the Montessori Institute of San Diego, working on her master's degree in Education. She lives in Santa Barbara, CA, with her husband, teenage son, and three (ornery) cats.

Sneeze is an inventor and his parents want him to skip eighth grade. So Sneeze starts to bug his teachers at Jefferson Middle school, so they will think he's not ready for high school. Mrs. Fierce is the meanest teacher in school so sneeze wants to impress her because he thinks she'll be nice to the students if they do it. Will Sneeze do it? Will he skip eighth grade, and does he stop bugging his teachers? Read this book and find out
