4.0 out of 5 stars Not for the faint of ear!, April 16, 2000

This review is from: 10110101 = (Audio CD)
The music on this CD contains some of the most extreme uses of noise and yet still manages to be tuneful. Scratchy records, childeren's voices, cartoon sound FX, porno film dialogue, are all layered on top of distortion fed thru a blender and placed upon spastic electronic beats. It's all a bit rough-going, even the gentler tunes have a noticeable amount of restlessness. This CD will have you frequently leaping for your volume control, as Datach'i likes to place spots of high pitched frequencies in unexpected moments.

If you're a thrill-seeker for abstract music then this is a great CD to get. "VCR Powered Carcass" and "X or A+B..." are insanely programmed beat workouts that will sure to have your ears bleeding, while "Midnight Cowpoke" and "Dizzy Fizz" has the artist putting in bit of twisted humor into the mix.

It's safe to say that if you enjoy Aphex Twin then Datach'i is right for you, although Datach'i is unique in his manipulation of sounds that the former hasn't quite explored.

3.0 out of 5 stars the sound of a computer virus, September 24, 2005
This review is from: 10110101 = (Audio CD)
when i first heard this album, i flipped out. this was the kind of electronic music that i was aching to hear at the time. (Rec + Play) injected a stale genre with alot of raw energy and gave it a wild and dangerous shot in the arm. the ideas were just overflowing out of this guy...i was excited! over time, this album just sort of slipped away from me. years later, i was like "oh yea, datach'i...i had forgotten about him." the record hasn't really held up well over time, but it's still a pretty neat listen from time to time. some songs tickle your ears with an Aphex Twin sense of childlike melody, but most of the cuts on this album attack your ears, scraping out your earwax with acid-soaked spoons held onto by fractured wires and angry computer virus tentacles. adventerous to say the least, i couldn't imagine people dancing to Datach'i, and i think that's the point. the beats are frantic and the sounds are corrosive. if you enjoy the sounds of Lesser, Merzbow's Merzbeat album, or maybe some of Kid 606's earlier work, then head straight for this album with no fear. for those whose tastes lie more in the Boards of Canada or Susuma Yokota, avoid this album like the plague. haha. you have been warned.
