A Great Lawn Mower!,
By Frank R. "just a consumer" (Sacramento, CA) - See all my reviews
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Lawn Boy 10647 20-Inch 6.75-Gross Torque Briggs & Stratton Gas-Powered Variable Speed RWD Self Propelled Lawn Mower with Electric Start (CARB Compliant) (Lawn & Patio)
This is one great lawn mower! Very simple, turn the key it starts immediately no pulling on a rope. The self drive bar is very controllable, the drive speed ranges from creep along to run behind. The mower is the same as the Lawn-Boy 10642 except for us folks in CA we pay an extra $20 for CARB Compliant. This lawn mower makes cutting the grass a very easy and quick process. Since TORO is the product of choice for professionals, and Lawn-Boy is made by TORO, you are getting a very well constructed and reliable consumer product with this mower. Also the 6.5 GT Briggs & Stratton engine is really a much better product than the Honda engines on many consumer mowers. The Honda engines on consumer products isn't the same as the commercial Honda Engines that earned Honda a high reputation. The only problem I experienced was that FedEx damaged the box in transit, not Amazon's fault. The oil container broke open on the damaged corner and the box and mower was covered in oil when it arrived. Amazon customer service offered me the option of sending out a new replacement unit FedEx overnight or a compensation credit for my clean up time of the oil covered unit. I have never been disappointed with Amazon's customer service over the years, that is why I always visit their site first for all my purchases.

I had a lawnboy before and loved it. Needed a new one so I decided on this. The
electric start is great. The self propel needs improvement. The wheel adjustment is primative at best.Right front wheel would not stay in place.Had to find a repair station before I could finish cutting my yard for the first time.Had to order a part.It is too heavy and hard to turn.Cut my hand twice on the ragged bottom edge of the of the case loading this 85 lb. mower in my trunk. This is not a returnable item so I dislike this lawnmower even before I use it. Go to Home Depot and buy it for 20.00 less. They also repair them.

This review is from: Lawn Boy 10647 20-Inch 6.75-Gross Torque Briggs & Stratton Gas-Powered Variable Speed RWD Self Propelled Lawn Mower with Electric Start (CARB Compliant) (Lawn & Patio)
My happiness with this lawn mower began when I found instructions, on the shipping cart, showing how to take the mower out of the carton. Mine was purchased at Home Depot where it was loaded into my SUV, although that meant unloading it at my home, by myself.
In about 20 to 30 minutes I had the mower unpacked while still in the SUV, wheeled down to the garage floor, and assembled for use. Instructions helped tremendously and shortened the setup time. My first outing with the mower was on tall grass that had been waiting for a new mower. I cut the lawn and found it to be a tiring exercise for me, now and old 74 yo guy. What happened, I feel, is I had the cutting set too low. Between high grass, low cutting, and bagging, I was plenty tired, although the lawn looked really great. The next three mowings were easier and I knew that this is one good purchase and recommend it to all with medium sized lawns. The clippings bag is a little hard to get on since you have to hold open a spring-loaded door on the back of the mower while trying to attach the bag. It can be done, but is something that needs improvement. The battery has remained charged since I bought the mower six weeks ago and the engine starts on one or two clicks of the key turning. That electric starter is one of the best parts of the machine. I kept my old mower (a White with Briggs and Stratton 5.5 HP engine) much too long. When it no longer started late last year I gave it away, to be fixed or recycled, and swore any new lawn care products, particularly mowers, must have electric starters. Please pay whatever is extra for this feature as it will pay for itself in avoiding back problems. T To check the oil, fill up the gas tank and turn the machine on with a key is outstanding and gets me in the mood to work. Out of the garage I go to take care of the lawn in short order. With the electric starter, I don't mind powering off and taking a rest whenever I feel like doing that. The hight adjustment works well for me. The manual tells what the different setups are in inches. If I let the lawn grow too high, it is easy to adjust the cutting hight up or down. On the last mowing I adjusted the blades to cut high so as to avoid taking off too much of the grass tops. The only negatives on this mower, for me, are the previously mentioned difficulty in putting on and taking off the grass clippings bag. That should be fixed. Also, I find the speed adjustment, while mowing, is hard to control. This is just a bar running the width of the handle and it always runs at a fast speed which you change by squeezing the bar up. Too often the mower just about pulls me to the ground when I neglect to watch the speed. My old mower (the White) had an adjustment for speed that let me set the speed at several speeds, low to high, and keep it there. Because of those items, I rated this a four. Fix those and it is a five, for sure.
