3.0 out of 5 stars Great story line but repetitive March 7, 2013
Verified Purchase
The game has a nice story line, you are forced to leave your homeland and start anew in Kalevala. For history nuts like me, the tribe elder consulted the bones (like the oracle bones in ancient China!) and they told you to go to Kalevala. So there is a story here.

You have a guide in Kalevala. He starts you off on level 1 with a nice little puzzle where you have to match 3 items on the game board. The game then turns you into a designer, as you are on your new island and can relocate trees and flowers. Then more puzzle games allow you to increase your cities wealth and improve conditions on the island, like removing ice. With the improved wealth you can buy things like huts, trees, flowers, and more to place on your island.

Problems arise on your island and you are forced to solve the puzzles to counteract the problems. That's my main problem with the game. All the game play is puzzles, so it becomes very repetitive. If there were more game play modes, different types of mini games, this would be a great game, because it does have a good story line and it does have good customization on your island.

As a free app, it's good and worth a try. However, due to the repetition of playing the same game type (match 3 puzzles) every time, it has limited replay value over time and I wouldn't pay $2.99 for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars pretty good March 7, 2013

Nice little game, downloaded and installed fine on my RAZR. But there is one problem that keeps it from 5 stars. The play screen is kind of small. I found some difficulty with my larger fingers tapping and dragging pieces on the small play field. They should have given the ability to zoom in or made better use of the play field.

5.0 out of 5 stars I played for how long?!?! March 7, 2013
Verified Purchase
I tried this game 1; FAOD 2; village building and match three game. I really didn't have any expectations but was pleasently surprised! It isn't overly complicated. I really like that I don't have to post to the world or "get neighbors" to move along. Heck, not once in the hour or two (lost track of time) was I accosted to "rate ", "like ", or anything of that nature! There is options on the main menu for social media links but it isn't FORCED upon you! I was so impressed by the game play and by the fact I can just play, I happily left this review of my own free will. Oh! Also NO IAP!!! It runs nicely on my KF. Enjoy

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptionally nice Match-3 March 7, 2013

There are four villages to be built, all with their own unique style. Every addition to a village is bought with money that is earned by playing match-3 boards. The boards have to be completed before the raven finishes his flight around the gameboard. Before each game, you select a hero whose unique abilities will help clear the board. For example, one hero throws a hammer, one floods the board, one creates a whirlpool, etc. Heroes are activated by making a match-3 with the hero's tiles. The game becomes more challenging as it progresses. If you fail to clear a board, you can replay with the same hero or try a different one. Villagers award bronze, silver, and gold medals for building their village.

Fans of match-3 games should give this one a try. This is quite a large game and very enjoyable.

Kalevala is the promised land of the shaman and your tribe must leave their land that is ravaged by drought and travel across the ocean to the new land. This is a classic match three game where you have to clear the board tiles and you earn jewels for coins. If you make good matches you earn explosives which can help you clear the board even faster. The bigger the number of tile matches the bigger the bomb.

There is a good story line interlaced between the games. You use your money to purchase homes, trees and flowers to make the town look nicer and attract new villagers. The graphics are nicely done and the game is fun to play if you like match 3 games. Just remember if you don't buy trees and flowers the villagers can get unhappy. In addition there are evil things that can try to destroy your village and make sure that you work faster.

I have owned this app for 1 year as it is a repeat free app. It is a good game and fun to play. It is worth downloading and even worth purchasing. It contains Flurry Analytics and internet access but it has no invasive permissions to gather your personal data. It can track your game activity. I rated it as a 5 star game.

5.0 out of 5 stars nice combo March 7, 2013

This game is a nice combo of match three and village building. Nice graphics and voice acting as well. I also like the fact you can make other matches while the previous move is still going.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Artistry in a Match-3 Game April 5, 2014
Verified Purchase
What a phenomenally artistic match-3 game! Gorgeous hand drawn stills, good narrator voice acting, a variety of "orchestrated" music appropriate to the vibe, and challenging match play with all manner of patterns and power ups. And all this with only ONE permission, simple Network Access. Score! There are social circle links and a outside dev page that use the network access (apparently the dev has a Kalevala novella on their website), but all very nicely tucked away, leaving a pretty clean landscape-only interface.

The village building, albiet a simplistic simulation, has really nice details, from your villagers traipsing around, talking, viewing happy happy trees (Sierra Club would be proud), to working the land in order to increase village size (Lee Iacocca would be proud). Side note about the village: you can drag old stuff off the screen to reclaim some coin and make room for larger upgrades- the tutorial doesn't seem to mention that.

Even the matching portion has extra crunchy bits, each tile having their own animation when selected, unlockable heros with various tile destruction powers, a nasty crow acting as the game timer, various tile obstacles... compared to other match-3 style games I've viewed, Heros of Kalevala has lots of eye-candy and gameplay content- and a weird title and a plot from Finland to make it extra memorable!

Only issue I can see is the fineness of the graphics. On my Samsung Tab 3 10.1 screen, everything was presented clearly, but the graphics strike me as possibly being somewhat of a muddled mess on any screen less than 7 inches. But if you got the screen real estate, then you will definitely dig the sheer artistry and challenging gameplay.
