there's no substitute for fresh grated cheese!,
By Kathryn Glass (Cuba) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zyliss Rotary Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
This is a very fine grater and so much better than the straight plane graters. It is very good for hard cheeses and sometimes for chocolate. It is not good for softer cheeses like Cheddar unless you cool them down in the freezer first. Soft warm cheeses tend to clump together in long strands and are difficult to get out of the cyclinder. We use this grater several times a week for our pasta dishes and even keep the cheese in it in the refridgerator. It cleans up easily and at five years out is showing no wear.

My knuckles wouldn't survive without this grater,
By East Podunk (Boulder) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Zyliss Rotary Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
This HARD cheese grater has been in daily use (we loooove parmesan) in my kitchen for over 5 years with no signs of wear, not even the grater teeth. It is equally handy (not to mention, esthetically pleasing) sitting on the table for topping off. The Zyliss has regularly survived the dishwasher TOP rack with no bending, melting or warping. It's major limitation is the min/max quantity of cheese required for a good grating experience. Thin slices (slip right through or get jammed) and huge blocks of cheese (the Popeye arms requirement mentioned in another review) just don't cut the mustard, or the cheese in this case. BUT...any reasonably sized (1/2"-~2") piece of cheese grates like a dream. Don't make cheese formfit the cheese container or it'll get stuck. Basically this is a common sense issue. Zyliss produces a wonderful quality grater that's become an integral part of my daily life. If it ever breaks, I would happily buy a new one.

a must have for pasta fans,

This grater is intended to work with dry, hard cheeses like fresh Parmesan. It is attractive enough to be used on the dinner table like a pepper grinder. Cleaning is simple. I've had mine for over 5 years with no noticable wear or dulling of the stainless steel grater blade.

Don't be put off by the plastic; this grater rocks!,

If you are comparing graters and thinking "ech, plastic! I should get the metal Noro grater" well, don't. This grater works far better and is much more comfortable to use. And it will last. It is made of a very durable plastic by Zyliss, a Swiss company that makes excellent kitchen tools. Zyliss also makes a plain ordinary can opener, but unlike the usual metal ones you get from the grocery store, theirs works amazingly well. In short, Zyliss knows their stuff.

Soft cheese need not apply...,
By "annelle2003" (Pass-A-Grille, FL) - See all my reviews

This tool is well-designed and handles comfortably, grating fine swirls of cheese with a quick crank of the handle. Note that this item works well ONLY with hard items like Parmesan and other European hard cheeses, but not with the cheeses commonly found in supermarkets, which have been processed to the point of being like rubber (including US-made Swiss, Edam, Cheddar etc.) These softer cheeses choke up the grate barrel and become glued to the internal structure, making it increasingly difficult to dispense cheese and impossible to clean.

The best HARD CHEESE grater on the market.,
This review is from: Zyliss Rotary Cheese Grater (Kitchen)
After seeing the Zyliss grater used in so many restaurants, and unable to find it locally, I was so thrilled when I was able to order it online. It delivers everything it promises and more. I have tried most other brands before, and none comes even close to the performance of this little marvel. My wife being French, she insists that we purchase REAL ITALIAN Parmesan, and uses it almost every day. The instructions state clearly that it is a grater for HARD CHEESE, dry nuts, and chocolate. We have used it for all the above and had extremely good results. The cleaning being so easy, as there are so few parts to clean, we haven't seen the necessity to put it in the Dishwasher, but I am pretty sure that it would not be damaged if one has the good sense to put on the top basket. Will recommand it without reserve.

I didn't know they used these at the Olive Garden; I felt the plastic on this one at the store after our last (cheaper) model broke, and thought this one might stand up better. It has! It is the only tool I'll ever use for grating Romano or Parmesan cheese for pasta -- so much easier and faster than a plane or box grater. The unit is nice and sturdy -- I don't worry about the arm breaking while I'm grating, as it did on our previous grater. It comes apart very easily for cleaning, and the handle can be used on either side for left- or right-handed cooks. I have used it to grate large amounts of cheese, too; I guess it's a little hard on the hands, but I think any grater will present that problem unless it's electric.

I am very impressed with this cheese grater. I wanted an easy to use chesse grater for use both in the kitchen and at the table. It is a very stylish-looking white plastic rotary grater. I use it for hard cheeses as well as chocolate. I bought this product because I love my Zyliss garlic press. I was not disappointed by this product. I also bought one this Christmas as a gift for a friend of mine.

I tried this grater at a friend's and had to go out and buy it. This is a terrific grater and not only for hard cheese. Chocolate and nuts go through well. Their only problem is that they need another drum that makes thin sheets to put shaved chocolate on top of cakes or shavings of cheese to serve with balsamic vinegar or top to salads as an elegant finish. This is the best grater I have tried!

Great grater,

This is a neat little grater that is handy to use for small fresh portions of grated hard cheeses, like parmesan and romano. You really can't use it for soft cheese, nor would I use it for anything but cheese, as I find plastic will take up the odor of various foods. I haven't tried as I have had this experience with other plastic items. You can't use it for large quantities either (more than a 1/2 cup), as you will end up with arms like popeye, if you try. It isn't much exertion, but after a while it can be tiring... I know I tried. I think everyone bought theirs when they first saw them used in Olive Garden 5 years ago. They serve their very fresh salads with an option for freshly grated cheese on top... One great way to add more fat and calories to an otherwise healthy diet... But, hey, you only live once. |
