My decision to purchase this Puma Bowie Knife was based upon my preferrence of simple tools which are exceptionally well made. One first must look at the intended function of this knife. It is a HUNTING knife. Not a COMBAT knife. Having served in the USMC for several years I became tired of tanto blades, composite sheaths, hollow handles and all the drama that goes into a combat knife. Also, combat knives are just downright ugly. The Puma Bowie, which is not a true Bowie by the way, is a beautiful knife. Unlike other knives there are no rattles, plastic parts or parts that can be wiggled by hand. This is truly a man's knife, a hunter's knife. And a hunter demands exceptional quality in his gear. The knife comes razor sharp and holds an edge well. It is hefty enough to chop small limbs. I have field dressed, skinned and butchered two deer with mine since I purchased it. It performs campsite chores easily as well. This is the last hunting knife you will ever need and your grandson will be proud to inherit it one day.

What can I say, it is a Puma. Very fine steel and handle. If you ever try a puma, it will be the only brand you will ever use again. The edge last well and sharpens like a dream. What a great brand of cutlery.

I got one of these back in about 1979. Though I was in England I thought I was some sort of intrepid mountain man or something. Or in other words it wasn't really the sort of knife I should be using for camping. So in the end it got put to all sorts of uses for which it was not intended, like opening cans, making tent pegs, chopping small branches for shelters and even eating dinner. Eventually it got dull and I eventually found a diamond sharpening steel that worked well enough.

The knife was obviously hand made, there was nothing particularly rough and ready about it, just a few places where it wasn't completely uniform. Nothing ever broke or fell off.

Eventually, after I had moved to the south of England and thought I'd never get the chance to spend time out in the wilds again, I gave it to a friend who farms in the Scottish borders. Last I saw it was in his toolbox on his tractor and still gets used for things that Puma never intended. 30 years on and going strong, though certainly looking a bit careworn these days.

I bought this knife as a replacement for one I lost in a burglary years ago. That one was bought in the early 70's and I'm using it as a point of comparison for this replacement. Right out of the box, the Puma Bowie 116396 looks great and feels good in the hand. Closer inspection reveals a definite drop-off in workmanship and attention to detail over the intervening years. I'll hit the bad points first, keeping in mind that these points might be unique to the example I received.

The full tang is not ground flush with the handle scales. Rubbing your finger all around the tang, you can feel the metal standing slightly proud of the scales. The mismatch is not enough to feel when gripping the knife, but is a slight annoyance just knowing it exists. The finger guard stands about 1/8" high of the tang on the back of the blade, by design. On the handle side of the guard, it is not filed and buffed smooth, but left in the rough. There is a small grinding flaw at the back end of the false edge where the grinder dug slightly into the metal. The edges of the lanyard loop in the handle are sharp and not buffed smooth as they were on the 70's version. These are minor flaws and not readily apparent without close inspection. The sheath is heavy duty leather, as on the original, but the tie downs are very different. On the 70's version, they were made from leather boot laces. On this one, they are some sort of plasticized twine or cord. I've already cut them off for replacement.

The good. My original was Pumasteel carbon steel and it was a bear to sharpen. This new version is made from 440C stainless. A few licks on a medium grit diamond hone brings the edge up and a few more strokes on a fine diamond hone finish it to a hair popping edge.

Overall this is a pretty decent knife. I would prefer a little bit more handle as I have large hands. Some thumb jimping would be nice as well, this knife has none. The knife would be a useful tool in the field and the sheath is of decent quality, although you might need to replace the leg strap and the handle holder material to something stronger in the future after use. This is not a big deal and is probably a $5 fix. The stag handles are very nice and the knife is balanced well. This knife is worth $100 but not much more as it is better than most factory manufactured knives but does not get to the level of many 2 to $500 custom knives that I own. Having said that, you get what you pay for and this knife delivers at this price level. Hope this helps anyone interested.

I was watching hickok45's You Tube video reviewing this knife and was inspired to order it from Amazon my favorite source for such things. It came on time, packaged well, is a handy size, easy to carry on the belt while mowing the yard and poking around wood piles along the creek and can trim a Hercules war club shrub out of your way when you need it. It seems to have good steel that reminds me of my uncle's WWII bayonet souvenir that he used to carve turkey's with on holidays. The sale price really helped make the decision easier. It was my first Puma knife.
