5.0 out of 5 stars heady, ingenious blackmetal, January 17, 2006

blown in from the arctic gales of the northern lands, 1184 is a truly revelatory album. Exceptional in every way- musicianship, songwriting, riffing, concept- 1184 deserves it's rightful place upon the mantle of truly, rediculously awesome metal masterpieces of all time.

The wintry, melodic riffs really stick with you. Windir has made one hell of an album here- 1184 is brilliant, haunting, almost hypnotic folk/blackmetal. Don't miss this.

5.0 out of 5 stars What can I say? They rule., May 17, 2006
This review is from: 1184 (Audio CD)
What can I say? These guys have completely destroyed the competition with this release. As a matter of fact, I'm very ashamed to say that I just found out about these guys, because they rule and I should have known them a long time ago. I would recommend this band to anybody who likes viking metal with many folk and black influences swiftly blended together to sound like some of the best music that I've ever heard. Get rid of your dimmu borgir and cradle of filth cd collections and buy this album, and along with that check out Ensiferum, Korplikaani and Vreid (Vreid is this band minus the lead singer). Rock on!

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible blend of symphonic black+viking metal, June 23, 2008
This review is from: 1184 (Audio CD)
This album is a real pleasure to listen to. Each song is almost a journey in itself. You will forget that you are listening to the same song because of the regular tempo changes and symphonic interludes. Then just as you are getting relaxed, Valfar comes back in with his intense harsh vocals. The drums are tight, and the guitar is incredible. The Spiritlord is one of my favorites. The riff is awesome and they don't just keep overdoing the same riff over and over. All of the songs flow without ever sounding like the average over dramatic symphonic viking sound. A lot of the songs breakdown into an intense but almost mesmerizing symphonic interludes like in Heidra and Journey to the End. I have read that this was the turning album for Windir, as they moved farther away from symphonic and closer to viking, but I think it is the perfect blend. Now my most favorite, original viking metal band.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nordic Kings of Folklore black metal!, February 25, 2008

TODESWALZER -WINDIR- 1184 - lyric "Dying with sorrow not in hand Welcoming my gods, an equal i am. A travel awaits before me, Encircled as a god, dead as a man. An Era has now ended But a new era will come, While my destiny fulfills itself, I glance at the world with wisdom from the end.
My efforts will now be rewarded, As i enter kingdom come. My hate will now get fatal For those that disapproved me once.
With my misanthropic theses soon brought to life I'll see a definite end for week, feeble minds.. As i die I'll go further Further than any other man, To obtain powers and wisdom As a god from the other end. My death will be revenged with fury of the damned, my eternal life will be praised by the gods at the end."

Lyrics like this just kills me - in a good way of course- his philosophy his vision in words and in music, but when i heard the song along with it i felt this feeling ive never felt that just grabbed me and shook me.... its the power of windir... bitter cold stabbing the atmosphere with sheer black madness and the bombastic stomping of drums just fills the air with a magic spell that casts you with ideologic formations/imaginations and soothing vibes.... a FOLKLORE/BLACK METAL band not viking in my opinion
-well thats what i felt hope you enjoy this cd its ONE OF A KIND that copy no one a genre to be followed certaintly....you gotta hear it to believe it.... a great experience!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, September 22, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 1184 (Audio CD)
To put it simply this album is a paragon of Black/Folk Metal. It can be both dark and uplifting, powerful and beautiful. Technically this album is very impressive. Great songwriting, scathing near-perfect vocals, and divine atmosphere.

5.0 out of 5 stars really cool, November 25, 2007
This review is from: 1184 (Audio CD)
I would have to say this band has a really unique sound in this CD, especially for how long ago it was made. It has intense drumming, screaming, and guitaring, and it also has keyboards that are fricken great, adding to the bands sound exponentially. Really catchy too, thats pretty rare in my opinion for todays bands. There is obviously more fast, powerful, technical, catchy, beautiful bands, but this band has a high level of all those I just listed.
