After being left by his wife at the age of 28, John Holiday comes into an even more hazardous relationship with a police officer named Olivia. When he can take no more of the ups and downs in the relationship he remembers his days of traveling the US before he was married. John looks for female pen pals with whom he can befriend in countries he wishes to travel. He sends out one generic letter to many different women and makes a few friends, however he never expects to fall in love with one of his pen pals. He becomes obsessed with Ling, a Filipina from a dangerous area of the Southern Philippines. He must see her but learns that it is too dangerous for Americans to travel to her city due to Muslim extremist in the region. He overcomes his fears and disregards warnings from the Department of State to avoid travel in her area. He encounters a culture and a survival he never knew existed.

Good to read with a couple San Miguel,

The author describes the situation of trying to find love and the hardship of a long distant relationship superbly and without hesitation. This is a real life story, very well written, no dull moment and you anticipate more and more. You never know what to expect next and you're just blown away. There's thrill and excitement and you actually feel the pain and joy of the characters in the story. You've got to get hold of the book and you never regret. It's worth keeping. The beautiful and sometimes hilarious images Jeff paints with his words makes this book a true joy to read. His ability to capture genuine emotion is his gift to the reader. Jeff's down to earth approach to writing and choice of simple yet powerfull words only strengthens this timeless love story. Take equal parts John Steinbeck and Charles Bukowski and mix in a little Herman Hess and you get Jeff S. Thompson.

Though Jeff wrote 12,000 Miles as a novel it is fact based sharing the details from mile one of how he met the Filipina that would later become his wife all the way to managing the complicated visa process to bring her home to the US. I especially found the insights he shares as he writes about his visits to the Philippines to be priceless. This book will greatly help you understand the Philippine culture as it affects courtship and family relationship building. It will definitely save you considerable time and money with Foreign Courtship. Congratulations Jeff!
