This is probably my fault for not getting a mini size gravel vacuum, but the name "slim jr." would make you think it would be for small tanks. I had a 2 gallon betta tank, and by the time you got the vacuum feature working on this (which required you to bob it up and down like an idiot for a while to get it working), half the water in the tank was out. So if you have a betta tank, get something smaller than this—I would say this is for 7-10 gallon tanks.

When you buy something that says "vacuum" you tend to think you're going to get more than a hose and a plastic tube and a clip. But that's what here, and that's actually all you need.

I just received this this morning, and a few hours later I used it. "Assembly" is attaching the hose to the tube. If you feel like it you can attach the black clip to the bucket and stick in the hose so it doesn't accidentally fall out and pour smelly fish water all over your floor.

This is my first fish tank, well, my son's first tank, and so at first I didn't grasp the concept of how the water was going to start suctioning. The instructions are basic. Put the tube in the tank, put the end of the hose in the bucket, and start shaking the tube up and down. In some manner of mysterious physics I don't understand - voila, the vacuum starts sucking up debris. The force is enough to grab the leftover food and feces while leaving the rocks where they should be.

The product seems very sturdy. It will be used weekly, so we'll see if it hold up. Right now, I'm completely impressed that something so cheap can work so well.

This is the first gravel vacuum I have ever purchased and I am so pleased with it! The self-starting suction is great. It picks up the gravel well, moves it around and separates the debris quickly. I use it on my 10 gallon tank and I plan to get a smaller version for my new 2.5 gallon. I have found that it does drain the water quickly, but it cleans thoroughly. It also does not bother my fish. I would recommend this product highly.

This vacuum is AWESOME, although it takes a little experimentation to work. The "self start" only works if you can submerge the whole tube; this works great in my 20 gallon high but I can't self-start it in an aquarium shorter than 12 inches without turning it slightly sideways. It really does self start though and the suction is very strong; strong enough to nab curious fish. Oops. But it's been great for cleaning the terrible poop mess my algae-nibbling platies leave behind and I wish I'd had a gravel vac with this much suction as a kid keeping 3-9 bettas. I also use it to clean hard-to-reach areas of my 75 gallon.

This is a horrible product. I did better buying the pupmp gravel vacuum or the electronic one that pumps using C batteries. No matter how hard you pump this vac up and down, the water flow is still like you forgot to turn off the faucet at the sink and a small stream is barely flowing. It did not have hardly any suction power so the debri at the bottom of the tank only got off the bottom of the tank enough to dirty the water. I would invest in a better product next time. I guess you get what you pay for.

Works exactly as described. The little hose hook for the bucket is awesome. It makes my weekly gravel cleaning and water changes effortless to do by myself without having to worry about the hose getting free of the bucket and making a mess everywhere.

It does the job. However, if you have a really small tank, you might have trouble getting it to work. You need to put it totally under water to get it going. My 2.5 gallon tank is almost too short. In fact, I had my husband cut two inches off it. But it does what is says. Not much to it, but I didn't pay that much for it.

Just a few thrusts of this into the water and the suction starts. That's pretty cool. It is fairly small, so I use it for my son's 10 gallon and my daughter's 20 gallon tanks. Anything bigger and I'd opt for a bigger vacuum, or the python vacuum.
