2.0 out of 5 stars Money, money, money
Ace released this compilation in the wake of the KISS reunion tour and album from 1996, PSYCHO CIRCUS. Just it, to make a few more bucks for himself.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ace Illustrates Kiss' Success, February 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 12 Picks (Audio CD)
Many artists believe that eventually they are as big as their band and can survive as a solo artist. Most fail miserably, but Ace Frehley pulls it off and shows why a band such as KISS with him on the guitar remains one of the greatest bands of all time. 12 Picks is a gutty, raunchy at times, hard hitting album that defines the spirit and talent that Ace brought to KISS.

The gimmick, you know there had to be one from a guy who was in KISS, is a guitar pick with Ace's signature. Nice touch! Most of Ace's followers are guitar players so this was a great thing to have. If your'e lucky, you might get a personally signed pick of your very own!

The music, live cuts which consist of mostly KISS tunes is great! Duece is a wierd yet interesting contribution as this was a song sang by Gene Simmons in the makeup days. The guitar work is great and an interesting piece to add to any of the KISS fan's personal collections. Cold Gin is as good as always, maybe a bit faster and more raw than the previously released versions. Ace's personal material delivers a hard punch in it's raw, New York City street, good old American Rock and Roll fashion. A must for any KISS fan!

All in all Ace delivers a powerful performance and ememplifies why KISS became "The Hottest Band In The World" riding on his guitar.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very underated and influential guitar player., March 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: 12 Picks (Audio CD)
For years Ace Frehley has been overlooked as a influential and creative guitar player. There have been a number of reasons, one being the huge popularity of the KISS grouup and stage show. The other being Gene's and Paul's desire to be in the limelight alone. Ace gives Kiss their hard edge sound that they lost when he left.

The songs on this cd show the sound and strength that Kiss bulit their sound on. It is a must for any serious Ace or Kiss fan. It is not a coincidence that artists have put out tribute albums to Ace, it merely shows how ignorant critics are and how differently Ace is viewed compared to his Kiss mates.

5.0 out of 5 stars What can I say? It's Ace Frehley!, July 13, 2000
This review is from: 12 Picks (Audio CD)
Ace is back and he told you so! This compilation CD featuring songs from Ace's after-KISS band, "Frehley's Comet," is a very underrated CD that many people have yet to listen to. Hard rock fans have grown to appreciate it, but I recommend it to anyone who is a fan of any incarnation of rock. Ace soars on "Trouble Walkin'," "Rock Soldiers," (my personal favorite) and ALL of the live tracks, especially "Shock Me" and "Cold Gin." Ace shows why he is one of the 5 greatest guitarists of all time, up there with Angus Young, Jimi Hendrix, Santana, and Kirk Hammet. Just buy this CD and he'll prove it to you, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ace = GOD!, November 17, 2000

This review is from: 12 Picks (Audio CD)
The second half of this CD is the real Ace. The live stuff. Ace, despite his bizarre behavior, is an amazing entertainer and live performer. Cold Gin, Deuce, and Shock Me are standouts on this compilation.

If you've seen KISS live and want a taste of what Ace is like as a solo live performer - this is a reccomended CD. The studio tracks are just okay.

5.0 out of 5 stars 12 Picks covers Ace's entire career very effectively., May 29, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 12 Picks (Audio CD)
Well this is a "best-of" that I never thought I would see released. Undeniably fans of the Ace KNOW he is worthy of a collection such as this, but for some reason a greatest hits just didn't seem that it would be warranted by the powers-that-be at the record label. 12 Picks covers all the bases really, though a couple more studio cuts could have replaced the live selections. I mean Rip It Out and Breakout were already released on Live + 1 (OK, in different versions) so why not replace them with, say, the studio version of Breakout and another great tune like Shot Full of Rock or We Got Your Rock? As far as the rest of the new material goes, it is pretty good. Rip It Out, Breakout and Rocket Ride sound like they were lifted directly from Live + 1 as there is little difference between these "new" versions. Cold Gin is respectable though we could have been spared Tod Howarth's melodramatic vocal overtures. It is a nice inclusion as Ace wrote the song of course but never sang it live when he was a member of KISS. Ace's guitar is the real star of this version of Cold Gin, especially during the intro and the bridge. Shock Me, what can I say....an extended 5 minute solo from Mr. Frehley on what I consider to be his best song. Who could ask for more? 12 Picks closes with Deuce, KISS' best song in my opinion. Why Ace sings it and includes it on the album I have no idea. My best guess is the guitar doodling during the solo. You would think that he would rather include some of his own material but, oh well. He pulls it off alright. 12 Picks is a welcome addition to any KISS fan's collection. As far as Ace fans go, it is nice to have most of Ace's prime material on one CD. If one has never owned any of Ace's post-KISS recordings, pick up this album. It contains the essentials and throws in a few surprises as well--if you are fortunate enough to get one of the limted-edition copies with the autographed Ace Frehley colored guitar picks (mine's blac! k...nice gimmick). But if you have an extra $15 burning a hole in your pocket, pick up Loaded Deck as well to get the entire Ace experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Frehley Compilation!!!!, June 5, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Twelve Picks (Audio CD)
I feel that Twelve Picks is a great summary of Ace's work through out his solo years. It features songs off his phenomonal solo albums, plus amazing live versions of classsic KISS songs. His solo at the end of Shock Me is just electrifying. Ace is a real inspriation to all of us guitarists, and this album goes just to show you why.
