Jorge Drexler's new albums is addictive! I have had it on repeat for a week. It is so good. I was surprised that it includes a cover of Radiohead's High and Dry, but despite my initial skepticism, I know think that it is a great version.
If you like Jorge Drexler's previous work, you will love this album.

I heard Mr. Drexler being interviewed (on NPR-radio) one morning as I was traveling. He spoke so well & I loved the song he sang even though I don't comprehend much Spanish. The music & the sound of his voice just touched me, so that is why I purchased this CD. And one for my Puerto Rican daughter-in-law. I was not dissappointed!!!!! I truely enjoy it & I'm glad there is a translation included. The lyrics ARE meaningful.

The title track to this album is stunning and most of the rest of the album has elements which are very moving, both lyrically and musically. It's catchy, natural and the messages in the songs are thought-provoking and practical. If you don't speak Spanish it's so good to listen to superficially as well. Highly, highly recommended, I've really dug into this album but the title track is a CLASSIC; so haunting, moving, beautiful and musically original within the frames of a great pop song. I listened to it dozens of times in a row getting glimpses of what he's probably talking about (but then again I'm an overthinker or a little slow...) and the musical beauty plus the mystery in the lyrics makes for some damn good clean fun.

Well...its time to review a much anticipated album.
And to be honest - though lovely in parts, this is not as good as Eco. "Sea" from the album of the same name set the tone for Eco while "Al Otro Lado Del Rio" (my least favorite track) from Eco set the tenor for this album. There are some tracks that share the spirit of Eco - "La vida es mas compleja de lo que parece", "Transoceanica" , "El otro engranaje", "Quien quiera que seas" and to some extent, the title track. But hey, the guy is still young and while he may be in something of a reflective mood at the moment I anxiously await his next offering and hopefully a return to the melodies of Sea/Eco. |
