The 12 steps work, with or without Bible verses, but this book makes them accessable for wary Christians.

A great study guide for anyone who wants to honestly take a look at themselves and began the spiritual journey of change.

I highly recommend it to anyone that may be having trouble getting in touch with what is going on underneath the surface.

I liked this book. It should help you in your recovery. With over 20 years of continuous sobriety, I would also heartily recommend the book An Encounter With A Prophet. The book perfectly addresses every issue that has been brought to me in the last 20 years by Alcoholics and Addicts in recovery.

This book has taken me and a group of struggling addicts and co-addicts down the raod to recovery. Each step has reading and related scripture to help you through the pain of honestly answering the questions . As a group tool I have read no better. A great study guide for anyone who wants to honestly take a look at themselves and began the spiritual journey of change.

I was first introduced to this workbook in a group setting. I have since used it to work on my 4th step inventory. It has been quite helpful in identifying many patterns of which I had been previously unaware. By working through the questions as directed I have been able to identify some areas in need of work. I highly recommend it to anyone that may be having trouble getting in touch with what is going on underneath the surface.

Finally, I realize I am not the only one who knew Jesus Christ was/is my Higher Power; He has to be the Force behind what drove me. The Christian tones of Bob and Bill are revealed at root level of what inspired them to start AA. Scripture will be revealed in such a powerfull way to those of us who have for so long been rejected and despised because of our disease of addiction, to find that we have a more powerful witness than those that have not reached our depths or that think their proclivity to intoxicate is trivial. The lowest shall be the highest, the last shall be the first. You will keep this book and you will give it away. I have gifted many copies. David B.

When I first got into recovery, I was afraid of anything that was not Christian, becuase I was so religous. The Bible says "don't listen to the counsel of the ungodly". I interpreted this to mean that if it wasn't from MY church, it was ungodly. I needed the 12 steps, but my Christian friends said I only needed the Bible, more prayer, and more church attendence to solve my problems. This book was extremely helpful becuase it put the "secular" 12 steps into my Christian world. This book has Bible verses to back up each of the 12 steps, which made me less suspicous of them. I see now that the first three steps are about admitting that you are a helpless sinner (alcholic or whatever) and you need God, the next bunch are about how to repent (more than "I'm sorry", but life-changing repentance), then the last few are about ministry (having empathy and brining a message of hope to others). I needed to see that as religous as I was, I was still powerless, and I still needed to turn my life over to God daily. I needed to see that as "perfect" as I was, I still needed to take a moral inventory and make amends to people I had hurt (wow, it really wasn't "all their fault", I had something to do with it too). I needed to see that as many years I had been in the church, I was still as weak and vulnerable as a new Christian to temptation (pride is a good one), and I needed to live the 12 steps every day. I worked through the book, one month per step each year, doing each year in a different color ink. I could see where I was growing, and where I was still stuck. I don't need Bible verses any more to know that the 12 steps are not anti-Christian. I finally have 15 years of sobriety, a healed inner child, and a healthy, happy life. The 12 steps work, with or without Bible verses, but this book makes them accessable for wary Christians.

I am a co-leader of a recovery small group through my church. We have been using this workbook for two and a half years, spending twelve months to go through it each time. An important aspect of this workbook is that it was written by several authors, so the words written in it is a result of a collaboration, instead of just one person's viewpoint. Also, the questions posed within are simple, yet very deep. The key in this, however, is truly pondering the questions. You may be tempted to just write in the first answer that comes to your head. But if you sit on the question, ponder it, look at the feelings it causes you to feel, and then answer the question, you will receive much more out of it. Each step is explained through metaphors and examples and supported with Biblical scriptures. Personally having gone through this workbook twice over the last two years, I have a new freedom in life. I have hope and confidence in my future. I have healed personal relationships and have a deeper personal relationship with God. I think the book is amazing! It is very deep work, that sometimes is uncomfortable, but the result is so very worth it.
