The lavender scent is not overpowering, nor does it smell like lavender.

For me, it's a sign that these bags truly are biodegradable and that this company is serious about its commitment to environmentalism.
Elizabeth Grainger
Very easy to tear off from the roll, never have had problems with the bags ripping or not tearing off.

I have two dogs so we end up going through quite a few bags. I try to be conscious about which bags I buy and try to buy biodegradable bags (I also usually check to see if they meet the CA standards for the biodegradable claim, which these ones do according to their website). I like the color of these bags, they're certainly not boring (if that matters to you).

I found that these bags have the proper perforations and ripping bags off the roll is fairly easy. I haven't come across any rolls where they aren't cut properly which is nice. The overall size of the bags is good too, very comparable (and maybe on the bigger end) to other brands. I have two small dogs but the bags would easily be a sufficient size for a much larger dog.

The bags have a lavender scent which I'm not so sure about. The scent isn't really that strong (you won't smell it throughout your walk or anything) but the scent does remain on your hand after you use the bag, and scented bags may be an issue for those that can not stand scented things. I would like the bags just as much if they weren't scented.

Overall I would recommend purchasing these bags. Prior to purchasing these I was using the Rascodog bags ReadyBags (6-pk) 90 Biodegradable Refill Bags which I also really like, but they were out of stock when I needed to buy more. The Rascodog bags would probably be a good option for anyone who can't handle scents!!

A lot of people have been posting 1 or 2 star reviews because they claim the bag is not biodegradable. So I sent the company an email, and this was their reply:

Gen Loyer replied:
Hi ___,

Thank you for contacting Earth Rated PoopBags!

According to updated regulations in the US, only a 100% renewable resource, such as our compostable bags, may be considered truly biodegradable.

However, our green bags have an EPI additive which allows them to break down unlike traditional plastic bags and have been tested to break down in approximately 18-24 months in a bioreactor landfill.

We hope this helps clarify any concerns you may have had.

Should you have any further questions, we are always happy to help!

Have a nice day!

I also looked up what an EPI additive was, and this is the company's website: [...]
and a quote about what their additives do:

"EPI's technology has been designed to control and manage the lifetime of products made from the most common plastics used by modern society. TDPA® based technology enables products made from polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) to degrade and, in most cases biodegrade, when discarded, into environmentally benign products within a few months to a few years as compared to decades or longer for the same products made without the benefit of the technology."

_____________________________

So these BAGS DO BREAK DOWN AFTER 24 MONTHS. But because this breakdown is facilitated by an additive, they are not considered biodegradable by US standards, but they are by Canadian standards.

We have a puppy and have been experimenting with the different poop bags and these are definitely the best - hands down. We've tried 4 different manufacturers and here's how all the bags stack rank:

Quality Comparison
1. Earth Rated: The thickest, the easiest to open (both because of thickness and seemingly less static), the longest, and the easiest to tear. And the smell is not overwhelming at all. If anything, it is nice to have.
2. Bags on Board: The Bags on Board bags that came with the dispenser that we ordered were pretty good, but not as good as Earth Rated for sure. We didn't order more for a couple reasons. First, all the reviews on Amazon state that the bulk buys are 2" shorter, which was a moot point because the bulk buy of 315 bags is more expensive than buying in lower quantity of 120. Nevertheless, these bags are ever so slightly MORE expensive than buying the notably better Earth Rated bags and at lower quality.
3. Generic-like bags from Amazon: We ordered some of the generic-like bags from Downtown Pet Supply on Amazon in a quantity of 220. These are the standard blue bags, but manufacturers might vary so quality may as well. Like I said, our experience is with Downtown Pet Supply. These were just about as good as the Bags on Board ones....maybe slightly thinner and they also felt a bit narrower.
4. AKC bags: Steer clear of these. I don't even know if Amazon sells them. We ran out of bags and had to go to the local drugstore to get more bags. We bought some AKC-branded bags and they were terrible. Really thin (imagine a clear produce bag at a grocery store) and were hard to tear cleanly without ripping the bag.

These bags are great, but THEY'RE NOT BIODEGRADABLE. Don't be misled by their marketing. According to their website [...] , the only thing really "eco-friendly" about these bags is the recycled-cardboard box they come in.

That being said, they're nice and thick (more plastic for the planet...), sturdy, and the lavender scent is nice. I like them a lot compared to other plastic bags, I just don't like they way they're marketed as being Earth friendly.
